I am currently completing my service learning at Martin Luther King Elementary School working with children ranging from Kindergarten to 5th grade in an after school program. This program provides the children with a safe and comforting place to do their homework‚ hangout with their friends‚ and get a snack. Since I am just getting to know these children I do not know everything about them and their background‚ so I do not have a lot of examples that relate back to the class work we do. In class

For my service learning‚ I volunteered at the MDC Kendall Campus Single Stop Office. Under the supervision of Monica Darden‚ I completed certain tasks in order to help students stay in college and graduate. I passed out flyers to inform the community all the benefits the program offers. I assisted students in applying for various benefits if they were eligible. I made phone calls to get them to make an appointment for financial counseling or tax preparation. I helped the students to make those processes

For the service learning component‚ I did activities like ivy pulling (April 11 1-4 pm‚ April 30 10-2 pm)‚ going door to door in my dorm with information about energy conservation (April 21 7-9 pm)‚ and attending the March for Science (April 22 10-1 pm). These activities give me about 12 hours of volunteer service. I brought what we were learning in class to other aspects of my life‚ as well. For instance‚ I talk to my friends‚ in person and online‚ about the environment and the impact they have

Our first SMART goal was to increase the sets or repetitions for the participants each session‚ but it unfortunately was not achieved. We noticed they were bored with the repetitiveness of the same routine‚ which brought us to devise a plan to get them better motivated. Instead of traditional weightlifting and cardio‚ we implemented sports equipment‚ such as soccer balls‚ volleyballs‚ and kickballs‚ and changed the workout routine a bit. Once we changed it and made a new SMART goal‚ we measured the

I decided to take this class due to the service aspect of the course. I came from a high school in the Philadelphia suburbs that encouraged service to the community. Students were required to log service hours by themselves and during school service days. During my time in high school‚ I had logged over 300 hours of community service both locally and through the class sponsored trip to the Dominican Republic. One of my favorite locations that I served was a senior assisted living community that

I thought the quote above is very important when thinking about service learning and how we can make a change in our community. We should not spend too much time dwelling on the existing reality and instead should focus more time on what we can do about it. It is so easy to complain about what is already going on instead of trying to come up with a plan that could change our existing reality. When thinking about my service learning site People Serving People it is one of the first things that come

Service Learning Reflection A couple of classmates and I had gone to Stanley Holmes Extensions in Atlantic City to help elementary children with homework. Plethora of things had gone well that day. As soon as we had arrived to Stanley Holmes Extensions there was a police officer that had briefly explained what we had to do. Having officer Law explain to us are task was great because we weren’t just sitting around when the children had arrived. Helping the children out with homework had also gone
