This is a summary of three poems that I have studied for the Junior Certificate. The first one that I have studied is ‘Shall I Compare Thee?’ a sonnet written by William Shakespeare. It is number 18 of 154 sonnets that he has written. A sonnet usually consists of 14 lines but no stanzas‚ this sonnet also have a rhyming couplet. The theme of this poem is true beauty. In the poem‚ the poet examines summer as a metaphor for love. The poet believes that summer is not as similar to love‚ as you

Beowulf and Macbeth Beowulf‚ identified as an epic hero and Macbeth‚ identified as a tragic hero both are very similar and different in their own ways. The epic poem‚ Beowulf translated by Seamus Heaney and the tragic play‚ Macbeth‚ written by William Shakespeare both have heroes as the protagonist of the story. The stories written in two different time periods‚ still can be seen with many similarities and differences. A tragic hero is of high ranking and unfortunately has a flaw that they possess

In Seamus Heaney’s popular translation of Beowulf‚ Grendel is nothing but a lifeless monster with zero meaning on earth. Grendel is merely a spawned creature with zero signs of intellectual thought process or consciousness. Although Grendel’s life has zero meaning‚ his existence is a quintessential representation of undesired evil in a human beings life. Grendel’s representation is that of an abominable spirit portrayed through his physical build and birth‚ his evil motives‚ and the battle between

People know what to look for in a hero. Whether it be pride‚ happiness‚ strength‚ or integrity‚ people generally have at least somewhat of an inkling on what makes a hero. In this poem‚ “Beowulf‚” translated from Old English by Seamus Heaney‚ Beowulf is a typical hero. The son of Ecgtheow‚ Beowulf is a famous Geat warrior who valiantly fights off the horrid monsters Grendel and Grendel’s mother. He gains attention and fame for his courageous actions‚ and he does not get too overly confident about

These lines are strongly poetic and express not only the elder’s feelings but also the community’s feelings of victory

Intro to Irish Language & Culture Seamus O Diolluin April 26‚ 2013 The Irish Language in 2013: Ireland’s Most Important Cultural Asset The Irish language has become a martyr of the desperate attempt to make a clear division between Ireland and the United Kingdom. This is because of the rough history between the two countries. Ireland was under the British government up until the rising of Easter 1916‚ where a desire for independence was sought after. Not until the 6th of December 1921 was the
