“A&P” is a short story by Jhon Updike. I really enjoyed reading this ironic story. Three girls had walked into a grocery store called A&P. All the workers of the shop were drooling over them. Just to impress the girls one worker quits his job when manager made comments on the dressing of the girls. But the girls didn’t notice him. While I was reading the story 1 got surprised that what was the purpose of the girls to wear a bath suit and come into the shop? Jhon Updike didn’t explain much about it

Sammy‚ who is an A & P checkout clerk‚ talks to the reader with blunt first person observations‚ which sets the tone of the story from the beginning. The setting of the story shows us Sammy ’s position in life and where he really wants to be. Through the characterization of Sammy‚ Updike uses a simple heroic symbol to teach us

Interpretation of a short story Although I find the story A&P by John Updike to be entertaining with some comedic interplay‚ I mostly see this story as a teenage drama that is played out through the eyes of a young man named Sammy. This is a story set in the early 1960’s of a typical teenage boy’s indifferent feelings toward his job‚ until one particular afternoon. John Updike’s development of characters and his use of diction and imagery are great elements that make this story entertaining

most households it is common for the kids to have certain duties or chores. Even though most kids‚ like me for example‚ don’t enjoy or take pleasure in work‚ many will argue that it was very beneficial and a lot of experience was gained. Even John Updike‚ the author of “Hoeing” said‚ “How many souls have been formed by this simple exercise.” He conveys that doing simple tasks motivates us to do other work that perhaps gave us the attitude and drive to continue to do work. This is interesting because to Sammy these girls are appealing‚ but in reality they are going to cause more harm for him than good. Throughout the story Updike uses symbolism to show how the trios of girls are going against everyday social rules and characterization to show the power of desire. It is obvious that the girl’s swimsuits are an important symbol of rebellion. These swimsuits symbolize the rebellious
