SYNTHESIS OF THE PHARMACEUTICAL ASPIRIN (ACETYLSALICYLIC ACID) AIM: The aim for this experiment was to synthesise a small amount of aspirin with salicylic acid as the starting product and sulphuric acid as the catalyst. The product obtained from this reaction will be impure and will need to be purified. This will be done by recrystallization. We will then record the products’ melting point and calculate the yield in order to determine the degree of purity of the aspirin sample. Diagrammatic scheme

4/27/11 SYNTHESIS AND CHEMILUMINESCENCE OF LUMINOL Abstract: Chemiluminescence occurs in nature and can be found in everyday products. For example‚ the light omitted by fireflies‚ deep sea fish and glow sticks is a result of this process. Luminol was synthesized from from 3-nitrophthalic acid and then combined with potassium ferricyanide and hydrogen peroxide to omit a blue light. The product of this reaction is very unstable and is made by losing a nitrogen and the electrons go from an excited

lower spent acid layer. We washed the organic layer with a combination of 20ml of saturated sodium bicarbonate solution and 20ml of ether. Then we drained the lower aqueous layer and we kept the organic layer. We added 4 to 5 pellets of calcium chloride to the organic layer and allowed the solution to dry for 10 minutes. After this we placed the dry ether solution in a 50ml flask and fractionally distilling the solution until the head temperature reaches 90 degrees C. Then we removed the fractionating

The Effects Sodium Chloride has on pond water Introduction Ponds are depressions in the ground that fill with water from either run offs or melting snow or rain fall from many different weather changes. There are two types of ponds permanent and temporary. Ponds tend to be much smaller in size and are usually only six to ten feet in depth. This differs from a lake because the size of a lake is much larger and is much deeper. The temperature of a pond is usually the same from top to bottom and

acetylsalicylic acid‚ was synthesized from salicylic acid and acetic anhydride. In the reaction the hydroxyl group on the benzene ring in salicylic acid reacted with acetic anhydride to form an ester functional group. This method of forming acetylsalicylic acid is an esterification reaction. Since this esterification reaction is not spontaneous‚ sulfuric acid was used as a catalyst to initiate the reaction. After the reaction was complete some unreacted acetic anhydride and salicylic acid was still be present

Synthesis Essay Reactions to death and tragedy range depending on the cause and effect of the situation. People react differently to every situation‚ but with tragedy and death‚ a common reactions can range from anger to depression to fear. All of these can be authentic responses‚ but the question is whether these reactions are appropriate. In circumstances of tragedy and death‚ emotional responses are appropriate when they are authentic and additionally evoke action. In times of death and tragedy

Synthesis of Methyl Salicylate from Aspirin Esters are a class of organic compounds. An ester compromises an organic or inorganic acid in which one or more hydroxy (OH) groups have been replaced by and alkoxy (O-alkyl) group. For example‚ the simplest ester‚ methyl formate (CHOOCH3)‚ is made up of formic acid (CHO-OH) in which the hydroxyl group has been replaced by a methoxy group (-OCH3). Similarly‚ ethyl acetate (CH3CO-OCH2CH3) is made up of acetic acid (CH3CO-OH) in which the hydroxy group
