The Book Thief‚ by Markus Zusak‚ has caused me to have multiple reactions‚ to the story‚ characters‚ and themes. They have made me feel mad‚ sad‚ upset‚ happy‚ but most of all surprised; throughout the recent readings every night more gets added to the story and more just surprises me. What completely shocked/surprised me was when Liesel fought back against Ludwig Schmeikl and what followed afterwards. However‚ there has been far more things than just that‚ that have surprised me. A couple include

by indigenous Hutu extremists. While most of the world took no action to stop the bloodshed‚ Paul Rusesabagina‚ a hotel manager‚ curtained more than a thousand Tutsis inside his hotel. Similarly in The Book Thief‚ one such man‚ Hans Hubermann‚ put his own and his family’s life at risk to save a Jew. Hans Hubermann took a Jew‚ named Max Vandenburg‚ into his home to save him from imprisonment even when it went against everything he was taught about. At that time‚ the Jews‚ according to Hitler‚ were

many of which you grow to love and feel for. Several times in the book I was bawling my eyes out or crying for pure joy‚ it really gets to you on an emotional level. It has holocaust themes (obviously) but I would say that they are quite mild. People who are sensitive to these themes can quite easily skip over the details and continue reading on as the book will still make total sense. Reading this book my views of WWII completely changed--as this is not an Anne

In “The Book Thief‚” a lot of themes are present‚ but one of the predominant themes happens to be the power of words. Throughout the book‚ Liesel Meminger as well as Hans Hubermann‚ and Max Vandenburg‚ use the power of words to “escape” the horrors of Germany. It was not only that the power of words had a positive impact; it also had a negative one on society. In the novel‚ the power of words seems to give an antipathetic impact‚ but it was not always like that. As previously stated‚ the power of

In the last quarter of the book‚ Nazi soldiers arrive at Rudy’s house to talk to his parents about taking Rudy to a special Nazi training school because of his athletic and intellectual abilities. They refuse‚ and in turn‚ Rudy’s father must join the army in his place. Hans Hubermann is also drafted to the German army because of his actions weeks before in which he gave a Jewish prisoner a piece of bread‚ although this reasoning is not indicated in the letter. His wife and foster child are devastated

One day that changed my whole life. I was 25 years old when I was diagnosed with cancer. It was at a time when I was doing what I did best – dancing and I was taking a course to become a future color and style advisor. I had been working on it for almost two years‚ I grew to the level that I could easily record the dance steps and I built up the necessary condition. In fact I lived and breathed dance and style but nearing the summer of 2007‚ I was getting really fatigued and wasn’t able to attend

The Black Death changed Europe by making the people lose faith in the church‚ which makes the government collapse. A big reason why the government collapsed‚ as explained by Anne Chapman was that “Some have seen popular loss of confidence in Church and political authorities as contributing to greater individualism and to a rising interest in personal‚ mystical religious beliefs”(Anne Chapman). In the middle ages many people looked towards religion as an answer to their diseases and problems‚ so when

Reading Books-as-Wholes Discussion According to Bauer and Traina book survey helps the reader to get a sense of what the writer’s purpose was for the book. Bauer and Traina (2011) state‚ “when one surveys the whole book‚ one begins with the literary product as the writer that we encounter in the text‚ the implied author‚ conceived it. We begin where the writer did. We begin by getting a sense of what the writer set out to do” (2011‚ p.79). Another important point made was‚ “They did not write

When examining Markus Zusak’s novel The Book Thief and the Office of War Information’s poster This Is the Enemy‚ I could not help but to notice many similarities scattered among the two works. The similarities between their settings‚ conflicts‚ and atmospheres are striking‚ leading me to the conclusion that both the novel and poster are relevant to each other‚ despite not being created in the same time period. Within the settings of the two works‚ I noticed how the years and locations corresponded
