Gershwin biographer Isaac Goldberg wrote in 1931 that with the Rhapsody in Blue‚ George Gershwin "fired the jazz shot heard round the world." This symphonic jazz concerto may be the most famous piece of American classical music. Undoubtedly the most famous classical work of its own time‚ it was a serious concert work that contained elements of popular music in the 1920s including the style of jazz. Gershwin’s Rhapsody even remains a part of American popular culture today; its famous themes are heard

For the second time in my life I attended another jazz concert. On Wednesday‚ November 30‚ 2016 I went to the Morgy Craig Annual Memorial Jazz Scholarship Award Concert and it was put on by the Ball State Jazz Ensembles. The setting of the concert was at Sursa Hall‚ which sits on the corner of Riverside and McKinley Avenues‚ and is a beautiful concert hall that is brick on the outside and on the inside has wood paneling. The concert I found to be very incredible overall and twice as better as the

New York City was the cultural center of the U.S. and was the jazz center as well. Most of the city’s black jazz musicians lived in Harlem‚ which had been the creative focal point of African American culture since the Harlem Renaissance. During its formative period‚ bebop’s roots in Harlem helped to preserve its connections to the African-American jazz community. That neighborhood provided an ideal environment for this musical experimentation‚ as these musicians often played together at musicians’

a better understanding of jazz as not only an art form‚ but as a culture. The audience was the first thing I noticed when entering the venue. Most of the attendees were middle-aged and Caucasian. They were dressed in casual but nice clothing. It was not a formal event but no one was wearing tennis shoes are gym clothes. I also noticed that alcohol was being served with light refreshments. This contributed to the relaxed and casual environment that I expected of a jazz concert. I also spoke with

Egyptian art was mainly made for after life purposes. For example‚ the Egyptians used a very accurate gridding system for many art pieces. On the grid system Egyptian artist created a method called frontalism or twisted perspective which is the head of a person drawn in profile and the body seen from the front. Frontalsim and the grid system were a very important piece in a pharaoh or important leader’s afterlife. In the tomb of Ti there is a painting of Ti watching a hippopotamus hunt which shows

Concert Report This semester I attended a jazz concert put on by Truman State University’s Department of Music. It was on December 5th at 8 pm‚ in Ophelia Parrish Performance Hall. The university’s Jazz Ensemble and Jazz Lab band both performed. Both bands were directed by Tim AuBuchon. The bands drew in a decently sized crowd. I was able to recognise several of my peers sitting in the audience alongside of me. I pleasantly surprised by the size of the bands and the level of skill they had. Both
