All About Eve
“All about Eve” is a character driven Hollywood movie that conveys the shrewd manipulation of art imitating life. This film is a tale of a conniving young lady who lashes into the life of an aging star with the hopes of replacing her in theater. The plot consists of clever dialogue and sharp performances from the characters. The audience is able to view the reticent story line in a short scene at an awards ceremony. In this scene participants express their feelings towards the guest of honor (Eve) and her ambitious way to rise to fame. Ironically, we see the story repeating itself at the end of the film. The story itself reflects a history that is as old as show business. Betty Davis’ plays Margo Channing, the star of the film fears her stardom will soon fade do to her turning 40 years of age. Margo goes through a series of events were she panics do to her aging. In reality being the age of 40 is not very old. However, in film business actresses are unable to play various roles. Ideally, most roles are created for pretty young woman, and after a certain age it is difficult to portray those roles. Males however, are able to continue their advancing years in many roles. Margo’s character is egoistical, very demanding, and obsessed with stardomness. Her life revolves around theater. The numbers of roles that are offered to her are suddenly decreasing. Although her character shows confidence on the outside, in the inside she is full of insecurities. Betty Davis’ was the perfect candidate for this role. Davis’ herself was a very famous Hollywood star whose career was going down the drain due to aging. This movie put this aging actress back to the top. Ann Baxter plays the role of Eve. Eve's ruthlessness and skilled deception put Margo into a tailspin of despair and ultimately launched her acting career. Throughout the movie, Eve idolized and secretly undermined Margo; in everything from acting to her true love. Eve eventually becomes a known actor, much to Margo's disgust. The movie All About Eve was directed by Joseph L. Mankiewicz in 1950. During this movie, Eve plays a fan od Nargo Channings and as she gets in well with her, starts meeting people in the acting business and launches her career. Margo Channing, another one of the main characters such as Eve, is the famous actor that Eve supposedly is the biggest fan of and comes to all her plays. When thinking of Eve's actions, two words come to mind; ruthless and naive. Ruthless is explained by the dictionary as having no compassion, pity, or merciless. This description fit Eve to the T. Naive, on the other hand, is explained as lacking worldly experience and understanding. During the entire film, Margo was a perfect example of being naive, as equally was Bill. Eve used people's naivete during the movie to move her up in the acting world. These acts, such as her holding a party for Bill and when she made the long distance phone call to Bill to wish him a happy birthday, show the character in which Eve is. Bill is Margo's love…

The theme of double and false identities is highlighted strongly on the train scene between Eve and Roger. After a passionate kiss, the camera closes in on Eve's face looking over Roger's shoulder. Her expression on her face conveys to the audience that she is troubled by her apparent "act" and that there is more to her character then we know. The audience then finds out that indeed she is playing another role when she sends the letter to Vandamm asking what to do with Roger in the morning. Another scene where the theme is reflected is in the scene at the airport between Roger and the American intelligence agent when Roger finds out the…

You know, I read in a book once that women desire attention. Even the Devil knew that and so he chose to go to naked Eve to tempt her, since he had just one chance. He knew if He had gone to naked Adam, we would still be in the garden and Adam would still be the only one who has tasted the forbidden fruit. Perhaps, Naked Eve would notice herself with the amazing figures God had given to her and it was impossible for Adam to notice when his eyes where not yet opened. She opened his eyes... so he could notice her. Thanks to Peter Cheyney for pointing that out in his book, Poison Ivy.…

In conclusion, the costumes used in the film The Young Victoria have a significant meaning and impact on the film. While there is the element of appealing to the audience for the director to consider, this paper reveals that there is more meaning to the costume choices than just appealing to the audience. Rather, the director chose the ornate and revealing costumes of Victoria and the other women to show the disparity of power between individuals. This helps the audience unconsciously grasp the significance of certain characters, particularly Victoria, and her eventual rise to…

The movie tackles the tricky subject of stereotypes assigned to women, and how much they can be damaging to a woman’s pride, career and life. People love the movie for Reese Witherspoon’s portrayal of a young woman trying to impress a man, by getting into and succeeding at Harvard Law. The main character struggles the entire movie with the assumptions people make of her, writing her off as some blonde joke, yet she works to overcome these stereotypes and find out what really makes her happy. While this movie is wonderful for its character development, I find the main character to be too much of a Mary Sue, as they make her a little too perfect, and while she struggles, the idea that she might prove everyone wrong and succeed at everything is a little too unrealistic for some…
