1 What Role Do You Think
1. What role do you think discipline plays in developing a child’s self-esteem? What forms of discipline best serve the self-esteem of the child or adolescent?
-When a parent makes all decisions in a young child’s life without explaining the reasons why behind the decision, the child gets the impression that he/she has no control over their circumstances.

2. List and discuss how activities, clubs, or sports, impact the self-esteem of children and parents. Provide at least two activities, clubs, or sports in your answer.
-Children who excel at sports take pride in their accomplishments which boosts their self-esteem, same goes to children who succeed in artistic endeavors or leadership positions. Parents who are active in supporting their child are giving the kids the message that their accomplishments are noticed and considered. Therefore, parents should participate in their child’s clubs, sports, whether it’d be football and soccer, or piano lessons and art class.

Activities, clubs, and sports can impact a child’s self-esteem because through the activities the child will start take pride or a feel on their accomplishments in the activity or sport. When a parent pushes their child in things such as sports the child starts to set goals or dreams out for themselves especially if there parent is an athlete. For instance I play basketball and my father use to coach me; I was not the most confident kid nor was I the tallest, strongest, or smartest. As I started to play and grow into the sport my father started to push me my parents started to push me so I started setting standards for myself. When a child sets standards for themselves and those standards start being reached you’ll see a positive change in the child’s self-esteem. Or you have kids who play other sports like volleyball (which once again I play.) Certain sports are hard to play and can either make or break you volleyball is one of those sports. In volleyball there is only so much time that you are on…

In many ways, evident by the manner in which parents behave at competitive events, the world of parenting has become selfish and primarily self-serving. Every mom and dad wants his or her child to be the star. Parents are pushing harder than ever to get their kids to the top of some imaginary ladder, but the rungs are being pulled out from under the kids as they climb. And in the end, it only serves to motivate kids to quit.…

    - parents should encourage children to participate in sports and clubs that are productive and give their children a feeling of accomplishment. However, it is not always advantageous for a parent to push a child toward a particular sport or activity. For example, a boy with little skill or interest in football might play the game because of pressure from his father, just as a girl who doesn’t like cheerleading and isn’t good at it might do it because her mother was cheerleading captain—but this is unlikely to improve self-esteem.…

At a young age, parents need to teach kids that there is more to life than just sitting around watching television or being on their electronics every day. Parents could introduce their children to different sports until the child finds one that he or she is interested in. For example my mother’s boss is teaching her daughter healthy eating habits. She comes home to make lunch so she can make sure that she is eating healthy. She always tells me that when you have well eating habits nothing can stop you from being healthy…

But the child should also understand. If their parents give them full freedom and money, the child will only waste the money. Let me give you my example. A child is obviously virtually powerless when he/she is still young and dependent on his/her parents. Almost everything he/she does, gets involved in, wears and even eats is decided by his/her parents. Due to them not being able to do anything about their disposition, they are forced to accept a submissive role until they are one day big and independent enough to leave home. Children often feel that they will be “free” once they escape the enforced control of their parents, just to discover to their dismay that there will always be a range of people that will play or attempt to play a fairly dominant role in their lives. When teenagers enter the adult world they soon notice that their professors, bosses or bank managers also have serious control over them. We will forever have people that are in power positions that “rule” or control certain areas of our lives. There are people that are appointed or have gained a controlling position over us that are empowered to police all our actions.…
