The Cask of Amontillado
1. What is the meaning of the phrase “A wrong is unredressed when retribution overtakes its redresser”?
I think that that phrase means that if someone does something wrong then there are going to be consequences for that person. In similar terms, you need to use revenge to turn someones wrong into a right by giving them their own medicine and making it worse than what they did.

2.Why did Montresor seek revenge on Fortunato?
Montresor seeked revenge on Fortunato because Fortunato had always hurt Montresor and his feelings. This time Fortunato had gone too far with being rude and horriable to
Montresor so he felt that he had to get revenge on Fortunato. He decided to get him back and worse.

3. How did Montresor know that the house would be empty?
Montresor knew the house would be empty because it was carnival season and everyone would be out enjoying themselves. It was a holiday so he told them they can all go out and celebrate that night Montresor took Fortunato to his house.

4. Where had the stone and mortar, used by Montresor to wall up the entrance to the niche, been hidden?
Montresor had hid the stone and mortar under a pile of bones in the corner so
Fortunato wouldn’t see it.

5. In your own words, describe the catacombs that Fortunato is led through.
I think the catacombs probably smell bad, are long and musty. I see them being wet and dusty with lots of dirt. They are probably very dark and old with not much light. I believe that it is like a cave that Fortunato is led though with dead bodies along the cave walls.

6. Where and when is the story set? Give reasons for your answer.
I believe that the story takes place in Italy during carnival season. I think this because throughout the whole story Fortunato is dressed a a jester. This is what people would wear during carnival season and the carnival takes place in Italy.

7. Why does Montresor make sure Fortunato has

Montresor, the main protagonist, appears as a dangerous and brutal psychopath “I given Fortunato cause to doubt my good will” and “he did not perceive that my smile now was at the thought of his immolation.” (Poe 144). As time is passing by in the story, Montresor reveals how obsessive and insecure he is. Montresor decides to get revenge and kill Fortunato just for a mere insult, and only because of his weak and unconfident personality. The insult and the other thousand injures mention before could have been just part of Montresor’s insecure nature. Furthermore, Fortunato does not expect that Montresor is seeking revenge or sees him as a threat. Besides, Montresor plays a great role of a caring friend until the end of the story. Montresor even refers to Fortunato in several occasions as his friends or “My poor friend ” (Poe 147) making Fortunato doubts of…

In "The Cask of Amontillado", Montresor is the narrator. He begins by describing very cryptically how he was wronged, "The thousands of injuries of Fortunato he has borne as he best could; but when he ventures upon insult, Montresor vows revenge" (Poe 528). As the story unfolds, Montresor's idea of “perfect revenge" is characteristically precise and logical in detail as to how he commits his crime. He knew every step as it would unfold, down to how his mark would react to ‘ego stroking and insult’. This leads me to think he knew his mark very in depth (Possible friends at one time?)…

An element of symbolism is expressed when the story turns its attention to Fortunato’s and Montresor’s clothes. “He [Fortunato] had on a tight-fitting parti-striped dress, and his head was surmounted by the conical cap and bells.” This symbolizes Fortunato’s foolishness in listening to Montresor, and ignoring the growing danger Montresor was leading him into. The symbolism also reveals how Montresor fools Fortunato into venturing deep in the catacombs by getting him drunk. In addition, Montresor uses Fortunato’s…

While Montresor lures Fortunato into his trap, Montresor said “your health is precious. You are rich, respected, admired, beloved; you are happy, as once I was. You are a man to be missed. For me, it is no matter. We will go back (181).” This evidence shows that he is jealous of Fortunato, he wants to be respected and beloved by everyone just like Fortunato. The Misfit had a conversation with the grandmother saying “if I had of been there I would of known and I wouldn't be like I am now (481).” He thinks that if he was there and witness Jesus then he would believe that he is real, then he wouldn't be the man he is now. This shows that deep down he does not want to be a bad person and that he wishes to go back to being a good person but he knows that it is…

Due to the revenge that arises from jealousy and pride, the Montresor, the protagonist, is so deeply involved in his thoughts of revenge from Fortunato, he does not even state why he seeks out revenge and the motive behind it. Pride, jealousy and the concept of killing someone go back to the time when people first came around. In the article, by Renee, she states when thoughts of revenge are developed in a person’s mind, it causes him to go insane and there is no time for second thoughts (1). The very first sentence from the story is “The thousand injuries of Fortunato I had borne as I best could, but when he ventured upon insult I vowed revenge,” this clearly depicts the major theme of the story, enrooted in Montresor’s mind (DiYanni…

Still, it also is a complex situation open to individual interpretation. Montresor plan of murder is motivated by a number of insults which are never mention in the story. However, the constantly indication of his family to be involved on the conflict may well take the reader to believe on a possible payback for some past encounter between families of society and power. The narrator’s tone when describing Fortunato, is a held feeling of likely envy, “You are rich, respected, admired, beloved, you are happy, as once I was.” Montresor sees on Fortunato, what he proclaims had once and misses at the moment. Being set at “dusk, one evening during the supreme madness of the carnival season” (392) contributes to the irony of the story, since a carnival is usually considered a happy and enjoyable place, as well as the façade Montresor is putting on to conceal his plans to kill Fortunato. When the characters move to the catacombs, the environment begins to become more revealing, describing “long walls of piled skeletons, with casks and puncheons intermingling,” which foreshadows Fortunato’s death. As they descend deeper, the darkness and skeletons that fill the catacombs express the theme of death and vengeance much more strongly, and allows Montresor to finally fulfill his…
