Well Known Leader: Bringing Peace to Nations World Wide
Who helps you through all of your conflicts? Who gets you through the day? And helps you in times of need? For the Tibetans and many other Buddhists around the world, that person is the Dalai Lama. He is followed by many people and greatly respected by many cultures. He was born into a non- wealthy, farming family and was born with the name Lhamo Thondup. At the age of two, he was sought out to see if he qualified to be the next Dalai Lama. When he was tested, he did in fact qualify and was moved into a Buddhist monastery to begin training for the position of the fourteenth Dalai Lama. Lhamo Thondup won the Nobel Peace Prize in 1989 for bringing/attempting ( multiple times) to solve the struggles in/between Tibet and communist China. Since the Chinese army has invaded Tibet in 1959 he has lived in exile, in India (Thurman The 14th Dalai Lama). When they first invaded, he was in his summer home “Norbulingka”. He left hoping that crowds of Tibetans coming to him for help would disperse; he didn’t want to cause more of a riot (Dalai Lama 13). Because of the Dalai Lama’s close ties with India, the Chinese government greatly criticizes him for it ( Dalai Lama).
Since moving to India, the Dalai Lama has tried to restore peace with the Chinese Government (Stewart 14). He has helped restore China’s constitution ( Thurman Dalai Lama). To also try to bring peace, he has talked about “Love and Forgiveness” with the leaders of India and communist China (Thurman Dalai Lama). As one of his last attempts of peace, he proposed “The Five Point Peace Plan” in 1987 (The 14th Dalai Lama). The fourteenth Dalai Lama tried many times to make peace with China and Tibet, with their culture and government.
Not only did the Fourteenth Dalai Lama win the Nobel Peace Prize for his efforts, he also granted the Tibetans peace from communist China, and he is greatly respected for it.
He took part in the unification of Tibet (Dalai Lama 7-8). This helped Tibet gain more control over their people and their administration (Thurman The 14th Dalai Lama). He helped them gain the peace, by doing things involving the Five Point Peace Plan, etc. The fourteenth Dalai Lama is also respected in the way that he is a national public figure of speech, intelligence and religion (Thurman The 14th Dalai Lama). To show how much he is respected for his acts involving the government and culture, Tibetans and other followers bow before him to show their leader respect (Stewart 58).
The fourteenth Dalai Lama is motivated by “The fastening of inter-religious harmony and the welfare of the Tibetan People”. He is also motivated by “The promotion of human well-being or secular ethics in the interest of human happiness especially in the Tibetan culture” (Thurman The 14th Dalai Lama). This shows how the Dalai Lama cares about his people’s culture. He wants to protect the culture, and the Tibetans from it/them being destroyed by communist China (Worth

Along with bringing peace to his own country, the Dalai Lama traveled and established laws to help Tibet and communist China “get along” with other countries around the world. In 1949 he made his first foreign visit (Thurman The 14th Dalai Lama). The Dalai Lama’s first U.S. visit was in 1979. He came to speak at many different universities about getting along, Tibet, and controversy between countries (The 14th Dalai). He has traveled to many different countries around the world to speak of the same conflicts and topics (The 14th Dalai). In 1973 the Lama visited twelve European countries in seventy- five days (Thurman The 14th Dalai Lama). With fourteen separate visits to the United States of America, the Dalai Lama has visited a total of forty-six nations (Boy Buddha). In almost all of these countries he has spoken about the conflicts of China and Tibet.
To help bring peace between India, communist China, and Tibet, in 1959 the Fourteenth Dalai Lama escaped to India, along with 80,000 other followers/Tibetans (Thurman The 14th Dalai Lama). He did this for many reasons. One being, he wanted crowds of communist Chinese police to disperse from around his palace and Tibet (Thurman The 14th Dalai Lama). He also wanted other countries to get along better with China and Tibet, so he thought to try and solve this, it would be safer to do in exile (Boy Buddha).
Currently the Fourteenth Dalai Lama does not fully rule Tibet politically. This is because he is in exile in India, and cannot control some the economics, and political matters that go on so far away from him in Tibet and China (Dalai Lama). Even though he is in exile, he still expresses concern for other countries around the world. Many of the problems are other countries’ economies, environment, culture, etc. (Thurman The 14th Dalai Lama).
I feel that the fourteenth Dalai Lama brought the most positive change to Tibet and its people because he won the Nobel Peace Prize for bringing/attempting ( multiple times ) to solve the struggles between China and Tibet, he granted the Tibetans peace from communist China and is greatly respected for it. Throughout the years, the Dalai Lama has helped preserve some peace between communist China, Tibet, India, and other nations.
