1900-1950's Artistic Movement

1. What are the significant political, scientific, and intellectual developments that occurred during the first half of the twentieth century (1900-1950)? (10 points) In the first half of the twentieth century, there were many significant developments that were political, scientific, and intellectual. The political developments that occurred in the twentieth century are fascism, liberal-democratic capitalism, and communism. Communism came into play during the Russian Civil War. Fascism took place in Italy and later spread throughout Germany and the rest of Central and Eastern Europe. These have lead to major events such as the Great Depression, World War I, World War II, and political instability.

(10 points) Some of the artistic movements that developed between 1900 and 1950 include dada, Surrealism, primitivism, cubism, purism, futurism, constructivism, and more. The artistic movement that I will go over is primitivism. Primitive is usually referred to as “the widespread tendency among Modern artists to scour the art of other cultures beyond the Western tradition for inspiration” (Stokstad & Cothren, 2016, p. 1037) This artistic movement shows European perceptions that Western cultures are more developed, civilized, and more complex than other cultures that are not as developed and civilized. One piece of artwork that is a good representation is the Les Demoiselles D’avignon by Picasso. In the Les Demoiselles D’avignon there is an influence of African art.
