Farming originally became an attractive occupation because of the successful cultivation of the Great Plains. Settlers were attracted by the short grass pastures for cattle and sheep, the sod of the plains, and by the meadowlands of the mountains that could be found in this region. An influx in rainfall after the 1870s turned the formerly barren plains into workable farmland. The initial journey westward for farmers was by wagon or cart. These journeys were often very difficult and dangerous (Doc E). Climate and the threat of territorial Native Americans in the West made the journeys last for long, grueling months (Doc H). Also, the idea of the farmer's lifestyle was that of the sturdy, independent farmer. However, as drought and debt plagued the farmlands of the Great Plains in the late nineteenth century, fewer farmers sought to be independent and more sought to be commercial (Doc C). The lifestyle of the commercial farmer was reasonably better and less self-sufficient than that of the independent farmer; however, they were still plagued by overproduction and economic distress. The settlement of farmers also contributed to the development of the west in different ways. Farmers helped to create new markets and new outposts of commercial agriculture in the Great Plains for the nation's growing economy. The independent farmer began by cultivating the land and selling to national markets…

Most workers remained as farmers and artisans. They devoted their lives to their work and were skilled at their jobs. Artisans usually worked closely with agrarians to make different products. Farmers worked the fields, growing crops and raising livestock. Their work would occasionally become easier from new tools made by artisans. Women during this time were housewives. They were doing everything at home. They took care of the children, the house, and the food for the family. Sometimes, life demanded that they work the fields with their husbands. Most women did not have jobs outside the home but a small number did work outside in factory jobs.…

They wanted there kids to have a better life than what they were living at the time. Some even migrated because they had a lack of food, or supply for their business. John Catanoch says “ he left his own country because crops failed, bread became dear, the rent of his possessions were raised from two to five pounds sterling” stating that his country got too expensive to live in. Unfortunately, his land was taken over by wealthier citizens to build a castle. Lots of Europeans left because they couldn’t take care of their cattle due to no grass. Corn farms where unfit to support families because of the wasteful tax duty. Basically, all farmers left their land due to the raise of rents and scarcity of bread. Not only did farmers leave, but also servants. Elizabeth McDonald left her country because her friends went to Carolina for better service. They assured her that she would get better service and greater encouragement rather than being in her old country. The price of labour had grown very high that also put shoe businesses out of the industry. As well as losing businesses, citizens also lost food products. In 1847, The Irish Potato Famine came about. This saved thousands of lives because they didn’t have to starve. Little did they people know that these potatoes cared diseases that ended up killed 1.5 million people. People leave for all sorts of reasons, but mainly because they are not as fortunate as we are today. It is sad that people who have made a living in one country had to leave because their business failed or they wanted better…
