On the economic side, the 60s gave rise to the consumer and environmental protection laws. The arrival of the Beatles (1964) from the United Kingdom forever changed the music culture in the United States. The 60s also saw major works of art from artists such as Andy Warhol. Significant scientific and technological achievements were also made during this decade as a result of the space war.
Political
The Cold War and space war with the USSR, the election of President Kennedy and his assassination, the beginning of the Vietnam War, and the civil rights movement under Martin Luther King Jr. are some of the political highlights of the sixties. The 60s also demonstrated how people could influence politics through the power of "peaceful" demonstrations. Students were the driving force behind these demonstrations during the Vietnam War.
John F. Kennedy became the 35th President of the United States on January 20th, 1961. This was the first time in US political history where there were televised debates. His young and charismatic presidency was however short-lived. Lee Harvey Oswald assassinated him on November 22, 1963 in Dallas, Texas (http://www.thepeoplehistory.com/1960’s).
The Space Race
President Kennedy is remembered among other things for his challenge to the nation to send a man to the moon before the end of the decade. The United States and the Union of Soviet Socialist Republic (USSR) were involved in a space race with USSR sending the first man in to
