1984 George Orwell Analysis

In 1984, by George Orwell, a man named Mr. Parsons ends up in jail because his children caught their father saying something against the government, and they had grown up knowing that spying for the government on your parents was the socially acceptable thing to do. Shouldn’t it be weird that a government uses its citizens own children to spy for them in an ongoing war against freedom of thought? Maybe it isn’t. Orwell isn’t far off from how society uses children in war today. This report will examine why and how children are used for war in the world, and the ethical implications of doing so.

WHAT THEY ARE AND WHAT THEY DO
DEFINITION AND SEXUAL USE Child soldiers are young children of any gender under the age of 18 who have been put into war either of their own will or by force. Eben Kaplan an author and previously an analyst for the department of
CNN interviewed Nils Kastberg, UNICEF’s director of programmes, and he explained that one of the LRA’s ways of keeping children in the group is having them kill their own family members before departing so they have nothing to return to even if they did escape (“Use of Child Soldiers on the Rise”). Children will normally stay because they rely on the armed group for food and shelter and lack basic survival knowledge. Women may stay if they have a child or have been raped because if they return to their home they will be shunned, looked down upon, or “stigmatized” for having any relations or ties to the group or members of certain rebel groups. Women may also stay because the man in the group is the father to their child and they may have other siblings or relations within the group and returning to the village would be fruitless (United Nations).
