In the novel “1984” by George Orwell, uses the thematic subject totalitarianism and reality to convey the political issues going on in the 20th century. On one hand, Orwell uses totalitarianism to illustrate the issues going on in Germany. On the other hand, Orwell uses reality to illustrate the lack of self identity and realism in the community. I believe Orwell wrote this novel to illustrate what would happen if the United States continued to ignore the Holocaust the world would turn into a dictatorship. Totalitarianism recognizes no limit in authority illustrated in the beginning of the novel by Big Brother and the lack of reality through Winston. Orwell says “The earthy paradise has been discredited at exactly the moment it became realized”. The earthly paradise is referring to the United States it has been discredited because of not immediately taking action in the dictatorship happening in Germany with relations to Hitler. Orwell states the use of war prisoners as slaves, public executions, torture to extract confessions, the use of hostages, but were tolerated and even defended by people who considered themselves enlightened and progressive”. Progression and enlightenment can be seen in different ways depending on circumstances and people on war. For instance, Hitler believed he was making progress because he felt Jews were not worthy enough of living so he killed them. Orwell suggests that if Hitler is not stopped then he will try to kill all minorities and the USSR will control the world by the year 1984. In conclusion Orwell is using this novel to inform the United States of what will happen if they don't intervene in World War ll. If the United States doesn't fight in the war the world will become a dystopian society making Hitler ruler of all.
