In one of the grand theories of Freud vs. Erikson, I am strongly in favor of Erikson’s ideas as opposed to Sigmund Freud, in the fact that I agree that children’s developmental stages are more psychosocial than psychosexual. For example, I have two children of my own which I can correlate a lot of their behavior to Erikson’s stages. Some of us can be so busy until we don't have time for anything. We seem to be drown in a sea of to-do lists, rosters, meeting schedules, appointments and never ending cycle of activities. As the book titled: Predictably Irrational, the author, Dan Ariely, argues that people’s economic behaviors are rather irrational, yet predictable through psychological explanation. He experienced third-degree burns when he was a teenager. The treatment for this unfortunate event took up much of his social life in the next three years, and eventually made him feel “partially separated from society and as a consequence started to observe the very activities that were once my daily routine as if I were an outsider” (Ariely, 2008, p. xiii). My day at work had been quite challenging on the day of the appointment and I was extremely tired and unnerved. I took a few minutes before the session to sit in silence and gather my thoughts, do some deep breathing exercises, and focus on the task that I was committed to. I felt calm and rejuvenated after this exercise and went in ready to start the session. According to Wilson 1995, the path to instant calm is creating a moment of silence and allowing ourselves to be still and in that moment to experience a sense of stability and focus. Five ways that help me keep stress levels down are by exercising, talking to someone most comfortable with, being more assertive, time management, and relaxing/ taking time for myself when needed. When dealing with stress you normally want to treat yourself by doing whatever soothes your brain and body to relief symptoms of stress. Symptoms of stress can be harsh on the human body and the feeling of being overwhelmed can trigger more problems. Exercising is something I’m personally big on because I feel like at the end of the day any obstacle I faced/ facing is let out at the gym. A good physical activity to release toxins and emotion can exit the body causing relief. Running helps occupy my mind with clarity and I feel at ease, it’s a sport I enjoy and can do with someone I’m close too, which is my sister. When I run I feel like my grounds are limitless and the same goes to my mind; it feels limitless in space and I have room to think, breathe, and live happy thoughts.
