The 200 metres is a sprint running event. On an outdoor 400 m track, the race begins on the curve and ends on the home straight, so a combination of techniques are needed to successfully run the race.
The 200 m places more emphasis on speed endurance than shorter sprint distances as athletes rely on different energy systems during the longer sprint.
Rules
Uniform & Footwear
Athletes must wear clothing that is clean and worn so as not to be objectionable.
Clothing cannot be transparent when wet and cannot obstruct the officials’ view.
The front and back of an athlete’s vest must be the same color.
Up to 11 spikes may be used in a shoe.
On a synthetic surface, spikes cannot be more than 9 millimeters (mm) long.
Starting Blocks
The block holder must sit on the track and cannot make contact with the foot pads. The rules require 200 meter sprinters to use starting blocks. Blocks are not allowed to touch the start line or any part of another runner's lane.
The commands of the start of sprints are, “on your marks” and “set.” When all the athletes are “set,” the starting device shall be fired.
If the runner false starts once in an Olympic 200 meter race, a race official will present him with a red card and he will be disqualified from the race.
In all sprint events the starter will announce, “On your marks,” and then, “Set.” At the “set” command runners must have both hands and at least one knee touching the ground and both feet in the starting blocks. Their hands must be behind the start line.
False Start
An athlete can choose to abort the start after the “on your marks” and “set” commands and before the firing of the starting device by raising his hand or standing up. The athlete may be warned for improper conduct by the referee if the action was determined to be inappropriate.
A false start occurs when an athlete begins the starting motion after assuming a full or final set position before the firing of the starting device.
