I reached the home of my observation subject, Boo, on Wednesday, July 17, 2013 at 7:15 pm. The screen door was open. When I rang the doorbell I heard Boo say, “Who is it?” She ran to the door and said “Hi.” I spend 45 minutes observing her behavior at her home. Boo weighed in at 7 pounds 9 ounces and 20 inches long at birth. Her mother approximates her gestational age was 37 weeks. Boo now weighs 27 pounds, almost quadrupling her birth weight, the norm for children her age.
Biosocial
Boo’s birth weight and height are average for newborn babies. Her height now is approximately 33 inches long. Boo was born on September 6, 2011. Boo’s body structure looks normal and her body size is average. Boo shows her use of all five senses. She answers when you call her by name and she reaches for her favorite toy when she sees it on the table. Her gross motor skills are displayed as she runs down the hall chasing her older brother. Boo picks up Cheerios from her snack bowl and puts them into her mouth, showing her fine motor skills. She usually sleeps throughout the night. Boo’s mom states that the toddler averages 10 hours of sleep and naps once a day for about 90 minutes. Her immunizations are current. According to mom as a baby her reflexes were intact. She most remembers the rooting reflex because she breastfed Boo. She also says that Boo was a “hot” baby and would usually kick her blankets off showing her reflex of temperature.
Cognitive
I continue to watch Boo play with her toys in her room. She picks up her play phone and says “Hi Na-Na.” She talks in Spanish for the rest of her conversation asking for milk and eggs saying “etch-e” instead of leche and “uvos” instead of huevos. She says “bye-bye” and pretends to hang up by pressing a button. Mom laughs and explains that she spoke to her mother earlier in the day and this was the exchange they had. Boo demonstrated stage six in sensorimotor intelligence with deferred
