Militarism is one of the causes because it created tension within the countries. It is a policy of glorifying military power and keeping an army “on the ready” for war. According to The Origins of the First World War by Emilie Zola, she states that “War is life itself…It is only warlike nations which have prospered” (Doc. 1). This shows that war was incredibly important to people and made people believe that their country will do well if they clash with others. “We realize that without power, without a strong navy there can be no welfare for us” (Doc. 8), this also displays that people think that a strong military would benefit their country. Militarism caused countries to collect an abundance of armaments, drove people into war, and encouraged them to fight and that is why it contributed to the start of WWI.…

The four main causes of World War I were militarism, alliances, imperialism, and nationalism. Militarism was a popular idea at the time and can be defined as the belief that war would make one’s country stronger. Alliances were abundant before and especially during World War I and brought a multitude of countries into the war. Imperialism is the goal of expanding a nation's territory, which would have been a rational aim of provoking warfare. Nationalism is an ideology of allegiance and loyalty to one’s nation and believing that it is better or better than others.…
While many factors led to the war, nationalism contributed the most, due to the desire of the Serbs to create their own Slavic nation and the need of each European country to be more superior than the others. “Additionally, the Serbians could or would do little to stop the activities of the anti-Austrian secret society, the Black Hand. To the Austrians, the rise of Pan-Slavic nationalism, and particularly Serbian aggression, was a direct threat to the future of the Austrian Empire.” (Doc J) Archduke Franz Ferdinand, a prominent figure in Austria-Hungary, was assassinated by the Black Hand, a Serbian organization. The purpose of the Black Hand was to unite the Serbs within Austria-Hungary, and it responded to the imminent threat, which could break up its empire, by declaring an…

The Underlying Causes of WWI WWI--the battle of the world: Bulgaria, Ottoman Empire, Austria-Hungary, Germany, Russia, Belgium, Great Britain, Japan, Romania, China, and the United States. The nations were categorized as either Central Powers or Allies--the Central Powers included Bulgaria, the Ottoman Empire, Austria-Hungary, and Germany, while the Allies involved the other stated regions above. The war was caused by numerous underlying reasons: the fight for more land and security over each other, propaganda directed toward opponents, thus resulting in a rise of tension, and the money spent on armaments. The battle for land, resources, and security, in my opinion, was the most detrimental drive behind the start of World War I.…
