What the 39 Clues books are all about and
The Changes to the Cover
Ever since Grace Cahill died and her Last Will and Testament was read, Amy and Dan Cahill (the main characters in all 10 novels) were chased from one continent to another, by their own family (uncles, aunts, and cousins). Grace Cahill gave all the chosen Cahills (they were chosen because of the branches each team belonged to) to join the race for the 39 clues and become the most powerful person (or people) in the world OR walk away with a million dollars. The two grandchildren of Grace (Amy and Dan) chose the race.

Book One: The Maze of Bones sets the story for all the adventures the Cahill kids are going to have to find all 39 clues and become the world’s most powerful

I think the cover is important because it give the reader, you and me a quick picture of what the book will be about. I made a few changes. Here is what I did.

As you can see, this is a hard cover book with no jacket (like this one). The reason for this is because the book is published with clue cards (like these) in each book. The reader can join the hunt and log in the clue cards for more clues to solve the 39 Clues. Just to let you know, the hunt is over and the winners came from all over the world. But it is still fun the hunt for the clues and try to solve mystery.

As you can see, I kept the name: Book One, The Maze of Bone, the author: Rick Riordan and the Publisher: Scholastic the same. I did change lettering of the cities the book was printed with the same lettering used in the book for clues (see

I added the Four Cahill Coat of Arms Branches and an invitation for the reader to join the hunt (READ THE BOOK, COLLECT THE CARDS, PLAY THE ONLINE GAME). If the reader joined the hunt and was able to be the first to solve the mystery of the 39 clues then they could win prizes up to $100,000. I also added a short summary of the book. I added the Scholastic Logo, the Price tag, with the ISBN number (just to let you know, the publisher uses the same ISBN number for all the book 1’s published this way they can see how many have been sold – neat). I also added the skulls used on the cover,

The two books I read over the summer were Counting By 7s by Holly Goldberg Sloan and The Maze Runner by James Dashner. The first book, Counting By 7s takes place in Bakersfield, California, and is about twelve year old Willow Chance who enjoys gardening, diagnosing medical conditions and the number seven. The story is about her journey through life after her parents died in a tragic car accident. Prior to the car accident Willow has to see Dell Duke, a student counselor, after being accused to cheater on a test because of her perfect score. During her counseling she meets Mai, and Quang-ha, who she lives with after the accident. Their house is a garage behind the nail salon that their mother, Pattie owns. Later on in the book Willow meets Jairo Hernandez, a taxi driver, who adventually gains…

Secondly, another more subtle appeal is the association to freedom. When looking at this cover one can undoubtedly see a vast open space that reaches to the sky. The vast amount of terrain on the cover could imply that the game has no limits. One is free to run where he or she likes and explore the animals and mountains. By showing everything from the ground to the sky, the cover imposes the idea of “the sky is…

The book is known for its playful, circular pattern. A boy gives a cookie to a mouse. The mouse asks for a glass of milk. He then requests a straw (to drink the milk), a mirror (to avoid a milk mustache), nail scissors (to trim his hair), and a broom (to sweep up). Next he wants to take a nap, to have a story read to him, to draw a picture, and to hang the drawing on the refrigerator. Looking at the refrigerator makes him thirsty, so the mouse asks for a glass of milk. The circle is complete when he wants a cookie to go with it.…

The colorful pages are jam packed with photos from childhood and beyond, there are some major messages from this book that grabbed me some are ‘to just be happy with your body and that in life, God created you for who you are and that you should always listen to your parents and realize they love you with all their hearts’. The things I liked about this book were the pictures and notes to each other that were added from when the Kardashians were in elementary and high school. I valued that this book…

There is a very sharp contrast between the shadowy figure and the firey face in the background. Like stated before this brings up questions and uses an emotional appeal. Is that the man’s face? Is that someone else? What does it have to do with Holloween? People like to have clear cut answers and this cover is the complete opposite of that. Things are cut and scrambled and it is hard to make out what is going on. This makes the person seeing it want to go watch the movie to find out all of the questions that came to them when they saw the cover.…

The author distinctively creates a mysterious combination of two different narratives in his book. Some chapters are titled “Hard-Boiled Wonderland”, others are presenting a description of the end of the world. “Hard Boiled Wonderland” reminds me of the narrative common for science fiction or fantasy tales. This is a world where no one has a name, only a role or occupation. The part of the book titled “The End of the World,” on the other hand, is a story of an amateur who is seeking for a place in an isolated town, surrounded by an enormous wall. The narrator has been separated from his shadow and will soon be separated from his mind. Even though the stories seem…

The Maze Runner is written for people with ages 12 or above. Not because of the story’s content but the readability. The book won the ALA Best Books for Young Adults, 2011 award.
