Accidents; There should be enough first aiders in school or on a trip at any time to deal with accidents. First aid boxes should be checked and refilled regularly, and there should be a clear process of how accidents are recorded correctly. If you are offsite you should always have a first aider with you with you with a first aid box and any inhalers or other medication required for the pupils you are with.
Illness; When dealing with a illness schools usually send the pupils to the office or first aider. But if you have to deal with an illness that has arisen suddenly, you will have to take action yourself while sending for a first aider. You should make the casualty comfortable and ensure that they are warm, but do not attempt to carry out any further treatment.
Allergic reactions; There is an increasing number of students in schools who have allergic reactions to foods such as nuts or intolerances to foods such as wheat. All staff in the school should be aware of the identities of these children and there should be clear instructions readily available about how to deal with each case.
Fires; Your school is required to have a health and safety policy which should give you guidelines for emergency procedures and you should make sure you are aware of these. The school should have regular fire drills (at least once a term) at different times of the day so adults and children are aware of what to do wherever they are on the premises. Fire drills and school evacuation practices should be displayed and recorded, and all adults should know what their role requires them to do and where to assemble pupils.
Security incidents; This includes making sure that all those who are in school have been signed in and identified. If any staff notices any unidentified people in the school they should challenge them immediately. If you are on duty outside and notice anything suspicious, you should also send for help.
