DOCUMENTED ESSAY (20%) Due Date: Week 13 It is time to write you own formula essay. _____________________________________________________________ This assignment is designed to allow you to use your knowledge of the formula essay a) to write a well-structured and focused five-paragraph essay (hamburger style), of approximately 750 words (no longer than 5 double-spaced pages) on ONE of the following topics, b) to support your discussion with at least two quotations from the assigned readings, and c) to document the sources of your quotations both as in text citations and as references, in the required APA style. Read all the essays before you choose one of the following topics. 1. Supposing you agree with Dan Zollmann, author of the essay “Illiterate like Me” (pp. 166-167), explain three ways the language barrier (illiteracy in a second language) could cause alienation and isolation of a number of people from their social environment. You should use examples from your own experience as an immigrant or an international student in Canada, and/or examples that you know directly or indirectly. You should also quote at least once from “No Nation So Favoured” by Hugh MacLennan (pp.5-6). OR
2. In “A Fable for Tomorrow” (pp. 123-124), Rachel Carson raises the serious issues of pollution and environmental protection. Select specific examples from Carson’s essay and essays by Sang Il Lee (“Our Earthly Fate”, pp.233-234), or David Suzuki (“Overpopulation Is Bad but Overconsumption Is Worse”, pp. 88-90), to present reasons why “The people had done it themselves” and discuss how in THREE ways human beings are suffering from consequences of their own irresponsible actions.
