5.1 What is net neutrality?
Net neutrality is the principle that Internet service providers and governments regulating the Internet should treat all data on the Internet the same, not discriminating or charging differentially by user, content, website, platform, application, type of attached equipment, or mode of communication.
The term was coined by Columbia University media law professor Tim Wu in 2003, as an extension of the longstanding concept of a common carrier, which was used to describe the role of telephone systems. Net Neutrality is crucial for small business owners, start-ups and entrepreneurs, who rely on the open internet to launch their businesses, create markets, advertise their products and services, and reach customers. This has led to unequal treatment in terms of net connection, subscription fee or charges, traffic discrimination and so on. Until to date, the users are still facing the same problems and this continuously happen if is not taken. Crystal clear that our country has been focusing on implementing the principle of the net neutrality in monitoring the internet service provider’s long time ago.
