5 World Religions
Religion is “a strong belief in a supernatural power or powers that control human destiny.” (http://dictionary.kids.net.au/word/religion). The five main religions of the world are Buddhism, Hinduism, Christianity, Islam and Judaism. Each of these religions has a similar purpose and its own worldview. Their main purpose is to explain what life is all about and its purpose. The different world religions all try to provide answers to the following questions:
1. What is our place in the world?
2. How can we live in the right way?
3. How do we pray?
4. What happens to us when we die?
5. What is the importance of a God?

The religions, Judaism, Christianity, and Islam believe that the supernatural dimension is a single divine being or power, a belief known as monotheism. They believe the divine being is separate from humans and can only be revealed to mankind through another person. This differs from the beliefs of the religions Hinduism and Buddhism who believe there is a number of divine beings or powers, a belief known as polytheism. One of the most important concepts in Christianity is the Jesus gave his life on the cross and rose from the dead to do this. They believe that there is only one God but that there are three elements to this God, God the father, God the son and the Holy Spirit. Christians believe that God became human as Jesus Christ and that God is present today through the work of the Holy Spirit.
The Christian holy book is the Bible. The Christian Bible has two sections, the Old Testament and the New Testament. The Old Testament is the original Hebrew Bible, the sacred scriptures of the Jewish faith and The New Testament books were written by Christians in the first century AD. The Bible contains stories, songs, poetry, letters and history and is the sacred text for all Christians.
Christians are expected to try to live a moral life by applying God’s laws to their private and public behaviour. The Ten Commandments are the foundation of the moral code and legal system of justice for Christians and serve as principles of moral behaviour for the human
