the french would have to live by. The british wanted to assimilate however the French did not. The second reason that the 7 years war led to more positive outcomes was the French got to keep their culture and even expand it using the Quebec act of 1774.
In 1770, the French people had finally realized that their religion, language, and ways of life were still under attack by Britain as their attempts at assimilation.
Sir guy Carleton replaced James Murray and became the governor of Quebec. He decided to appoint some Canadians into government positions to support the French catholic church. He then traveled to England and for years attempted to convince the British government to change the laws to preserve harmony throughout the colony. Carleton’s acts paid off, the British decided to pass on the Quebec act which have back many rights to the French that they had lost during the Royal Proclamation. As one of the laws state, “ allowance for Catholics to hold political positions without giving up their religion.” (History textbook pg.98) The following right in my belief is the most significant to the
Canadians.
Although there is much positive consequence sometimes we have to look at different perspectives. Let's look at the First Nations Having to protect their own interests, land, and homes since they fought along side of the French. Let's take a point of view of Ojibwe Chief Minavavana, “ Englishman! Although you have conquered the French, you have not yet conquered us! We are not your slaves. These lakers, these woods and mountains were left to us by our ancestors. They are our inheritance; and we will party with them to none…
Englishman, out father, the King of France; employed our young men to make war upon your nation. In this warfare many of them have been killed, and it is our custom to retaliate until such time as the spirits of the slain are satisfies.” As the chief states just because the British had defeated the French it did not mean that the First Nations would bow down to them and give up the years of hard work and sacrifice they had created. The French had promised that they would protect the First nations families, communities, resources in trade for helping the french fight against the British, Although the French had felt that the First Nations would no longer be needed they still had an agreement. The First nations are now alliances with Canada, however they still had to finish the fight against British since the French had no interest in doing. In the end the First nations and the British had come to their senses, some of the first nations had been able to come back to their homes. And in good, some even found better homes away from their original fighting grounds.
In conclusion, I strongly believe that the consequences of the 7 years war was more positive during the long term and affected more people, however looking upon different perspectives in the short term it was negative.
