Power vs Powerless How can someone control a society? Aldous Huxley writes in his text Brave New World of the pitfalls of a society based on classes, with those in the upper classes holding more power than those in the lower classes having virtually no power. He describes this system as Alpha, Beta, Gamma, Delta, and Epsilon. Gammas, Deltas, and Epsilons are the lower class, they serve the higher classes which are Alpha and Beta. Between Alpha and Beta, Alpha is the highest. In Aldous Huxley's book Brave New World he uses many points of Marxist theory. In the novel Brave New World by Aldous Huxley, he writes about a society controlled by a certain caste by keeping them happy and …show more content…
In Huxley novel Brave New World he states, “that is the secret of happiness and virtue liking what you’ve got to do. All conditioning aims at that: making people like their unescapable social destiny” (Huxley 16). This shows how each individual has their own job in it’s own caste. By using the word “conditioning” is forcing away any human thoughts and even emotions making society to be happy with in their own caste. They made society think that you have to work to be happy. In Marxist and Materialist Analysis by Donald Hall he writes, “Fundamental to Marxist and materialist analysis is the belief that an attention to economic conditions is essential for understanding human attitudes and actions, past and present, as well as key to creating a more equitable future” (Hall 76). This explains how to make a society happy by, looking at the economic conditions and understanding humans attitude. In Brave New World by Aldous Huxley he states, “they were not conditioned to obey. What with the temptations and lonely remorses, what with all the diseases and the the endless isolating pain” (Huxley 41). Karl Marx said to have a society who is obedient and loyal you must make them happy of how their lives are. By using this it would not make a society fight back and still be powerless. Huxley also states in Brave New World, “Gramme is better than a damn” (Huxley …show more content…
Community and identity are highly epazied when Lenina says, "Everyone works for everyone else. We can't do without any one. Even Epsilons"(Huxley 91). No matter who you are, no matter what class you are everyone is working together and everyone benefits from this phrase. The social castes move from the Alphas, the most talented and beautiful people in society, to the Epsilons and Gammas, the world's less talented and smart. The most important meaning in that phrase is “Stability” because only through stability can happiness be maintained and all unpleasant feelings and emotions can be deleted. Without stability in this society there will be no community, identity, and happiness. Each person’s conditioning causes him to feel as if they are all part of one a social system. This phrase is later pointed out that this system sincerely benefits those who rule and run it, not those who are part of it. For example, in the text Brave New World it states, "The more stitches the less riches"(51). The phrase is set so deeply go into the awareness of everyone that they take it’s meaning to be reality. In this case, the phrase sparks consumer behavior, if people fix their own clothes than rather buying it the companies are not going to make money. Resulting in much less cash within the economic system of society. Creating consumption is one of the leader responsibilities of government because
