A Comparison Of Star Wars In Steinbeck's Of Mice And Men
Star Wars and Steinbeck’s Of Mice and Men have very different storylines, but after some careful consideration, some characters share similar story arcs, which shows cliches in stories. Sure, Steinbeck is a social critique, but he needs to also make a good story to keep reader’s attention. George Lucas, although not a social critique, has to also come up with a way to keep moviegoers attention. Because of this need they coincidentally created very similar storylines. This makes Steinbeck’s George feel and act like Obi Wan Kenobi from the Star Wars prequels. Steinbeck describes George as a short tempered man with big plans (14), but over time you see his character change to a more gentle and caring personality. Obi Wan in the prequels is the
exact same way, starts of young and brash, then he eventually turns into a competent adult, the only difference between the stories is that for Obi Wan it’s a coming of age story. At one point Obi Wan gets an apprentice, Anakin, who acts very similar to Lennie, as in he has good intentions but messes everything up because he’s dumb. Obi Wan tells Anakin to stay away from Senator Amidala, George tells Lennie to stay away from Curley’s wife, guess what they both do, get tangled in with them. What happens because of this is extremely similar with the exception being the final outcome. Anakin wants to save Amidala from dying, Lennie just wants to feel some soft hair, in both scenarios, the females die, and because of this they get chased down and attacked by the person who was close to them. So in this way they’re somewhat different, however, the point still stands that they both got tangled with a female character, both accidentally killed them, and both get hunted down by the person that trained or took care of them, depending on how you interpret it. In the end Lennie gets killed by George, Anakin nearly gets killed by Obi Wan, but survives. Because of this he comes back as Darth Vader and in the next star wars movie kills Obi Wan Kenobi. In the end, based on the evidence shown, it was probably best for Lennie to die, otherwise he could return back stronger than ever with the support of an entire empire to kill George.
