A Deeper Look Into The Grass Below Pre-day 1: ‘The stillness of silence allows the soul to fly. Subtle bliss in the lack of danger, allows the soul to reach the sky. Imagine a place where the grass stands tall and green, where the air smells of a fresh fallen rain and time stands as still as the mighty oak. I’m standing in the tall sea of green grass, thick and soft like a rolling living natural carpet that dances to the melody the wind plays through the leaves on the trees. And, I feel enveloped by the crisp early autumn breeze that carries with it the ever-lingering essence of pine and cedar to swirl around in my head. Clearly, I’m engulfed by the peace and harmony found

You notice that you have many types of grass in your yard,. You have Bluegrass, Rye, Fescue, Kentucky Bluegrass, Fine Fescue, Ryegrass, Bent grass, and Zoysia. Your favorite type of grass is the Kentucky Bluegrass, because you like the way that it smells as if you are at your grandma's for Christmas, with all the pine needles on the ground. When you are at your work, you do some research on the Kentucky Bluegrass and find out ‘Kentucky Bluegrass is one of the most popular grasses in the North. It has a deep green color and excellent texture. It grows well from seed and is a popular choice for sod farms in the North. It grows from a very extensive system of rhizomes, underground stems, that produce new plants. However, it does not grow well in deep shade.’ When you get home that afternoon around 4:30 pm, you are immersed in the rays of sun as it dips lower into the horizon. You are engrossed, captivated and mesmerized all at the same time, and you decide to look at the grass with the multiple shades of reds and yellow lighting washing over the grass. What you find is amazing. You find that if you watch close enough you can actually see the grass growing!! You lose track of time. Your focus is on seeing each blade elongate a miniscule amount, and when you check your watch you notice it’s 8pm, you actually watched grass grow for 4 hours. As you get up, you have this nagging thought that you have forgotten something. Upon standing straight up, grabbing your briefcase and jacket, the realization hits. You close your eyes, you suck in your breath, your heart palpitates unrhythmically as if its ready to explode out of your chest as realization hits. Its date night and you blew off your wife who you were supposed to meet at the restaurant (at 7pm). It took you half a year to get a reservations at that restaurant. How long did she sit

In the Terrestrial camber of our ecocolumn, several changes happened over time. The clover seeds planted at the beginning had a rapid growth rate. At one point our chamber had a couple dozen emerging plants, yet majority died from inconsistent watering and sunlight. At the end of the experiment, the only surviving plants were all on one side, due to sunlight exposure, and the plants were very small, due to the inconsistent…

The works we studied within Creative Writing were all helpful in creating my own works to submit to the class. Throughout all of the reading, many of the works inspired me in different ways, whether it was short story plot ideas or word usage in the poems. While crafting my work for the final portfolio, I reviewed many of the poems from our poetry packet in an effort to find inspiration and to create new interesting images. I took the most inspiration for my formal poem, which I found most difficult to write. One of the poems that was most useful to me was Jilly Dybka’s “Memphis, 1976.” Dybka’s poem follows the sestina form; I also wrote my last poem in this form, so it helped to follow the form by looking at her poem as an example. Dybka’s…

Lorna Dee Cervantes' poem, “Poema para los Californios Muertos” (“Poem for the Dead Californios”), is a commentary on what happened to the original inhabitants of California when California was still Mexico, and an address to the speaker's dead ancestors. Utilizing a unique dynamic, consistently alternating between Spanish and English, Cervantes accurately represents the fear, hatred, and humility experienced by the “Californios” through rhythm, arrangement, tone, and most importantly, through use of language.…

The text that I will be analyzing is a poem by Lorna Crozier called The Child Who Walks Backwards. Throughout my analysis I will look into parental abuse, underlying meanings in the lines in the poetry, as well as connections I can make personally to the book. I think it is also important that I bring forth essential messages in the words and statements of the poem. The main theme I will choose to focus on is that abuse does not only happen at school or back alleys, but that it happens in homes as well.…
