In the poem, “A Dream Within a Dream,” Edgar Allan Poe conveys the theme that reality is based on one’s perceptions through his 1st point of view, the author supports this by describing his efforts to desperately find realism instead of the fantasy he believes himself to be present in. (Line 11) Poe develops his message by applying italicized words for greater emphasis, terms with different connotations to enhance the tone and mood, and a unique poetic structure. The difference in tone allows readers to observe the writer’s misery of not possessing the ability to perceive a reality.
• The writer reveals that he is on a shore and weeps at the shortage of his grasp on grains of sand running through his hand in a negative tone contradicting the previous stanza.
• The writer simply transferred from leaving a loved one to being present on a “surf-tormented shore” indicating that he is in dream because of the sudden transition. There is also a Juxtaposition present as the positive connotation of “golden” referring the sand contradicts the negative connotation of “tormented” that is associated with the beach. (Line 13, 15) There is a dash present in line 15 to indicate a pause adding emphasis on the torment that is residing inside himself as he desperately desires realism. A pause is indicated in the middle of Line 18 to indicate the author’s desperation and sadness.
• Poe begins to ask God through the Repetition of “O God!” and rhetorical questions for more possession of the sand. (Line 19, 21) The writer in a sign of anxiety desires at least “One from the pitiless wave?” or dream. (Line 22) However, these are rhetorical questions as Poe knows he is unable to, indicating the desperation he is in to achieve realism.
• In the last two lines of the stanza, contrasting the previously expressed idea that hope is lost in finding reality, the writer repeats the refrain in the form of a question implying that he still has faith in locating realism.
