1 Read the story 'the tell tale heart' by Edgar Allan Poe
1 Write a 2 sentence summary of the plot
It starts with the narrator talking about how he stalked an old man for many nights until one night he decides to kill him because of his vulture eye, (he hides the body parts underneath the floorboard). The police arrive and he then he acts casual as if nothing happened and shows them around the house, until he feels guilty and hears the beating of the old man's heart and confesses to the crime. 1 Why does the narrator refer to the old man having vulture eyes? How does he use this to point himself as the victim?
He does this because the eye is like a vulture, gnawing upon his mind and emotions. It was always watching him, looking sinister and scheming. Therefore when he does kill the old man it seems justified as it is the old mans fault that he gets killed because of his eye. The eye was controlling. 1 How does Poe use the eye as a motif for identity? (think about how the eyes are referred to as the window to the soul) the eye becomes the focal point of the story. It is the catalyst. It is the reason for the murder. Through the eye you learn about the narrators character. It symbolises nothing of the old man. The cataract eye, and its increasing blindness, is juxtaposed with its symbolic role within the narrative. Poe uses the eye to illuminate the responder as to the true nature of the narrator's intent and actions. Whilst physically instilling blindness upon the old man, this blind eye, the 'vulture eye', provides a pathway to the 'soul' the very being of the narrator; which is that of a murderer. 1 How does Poe use language to convey elements of the villain in this story?
The narrator's lack of remorse conveys his villainous personality. 'His eye would trouble me no more', this shows how instead of feeling any remorse about the innocent old man's death and considering what he has just done, he only thinks about himself and
