Literary Devices Used In The Tell Tale Heart Essay
Edgar Allan Poe used literary devices of setting to create a dark ,threatening tone in his short story Tell,Tale,Heart Which are mood and atmosphere,time,and population.
The most powerful tool that poe used was mood and atmosphere. One example was when the old man's room blocked out all ray of light.This enhances the darkness and threatening because it makes the reader feel scared at night in their room.(pg.538:2). Another example of fear darkness that Poe used was how the murderer covered the lantern with a black cloth so you as a reader can get a sense that you be watched at night by probably you own murderer.(pg 538:1). Lastly the most fearing and darkness is the fact that Poe describes how the old man murderer watches the old man for hours in his room at midnight ,the darkest time of the night.This makes the reader feels feared and with a darkness around them that Poe used in the story.
Moving more into the story, time of day is another dark and fearful elements that Poe used. In (Pg : ) Poe states that the old man's murderer took him and hour just to get his whole head within the opening so far to see him as he lay upon his bed. This makes the story suspenseful and makes the reader want to know more about the neighbors hearing the sounds of the old man yelling. Therefore another example is in (pg : ) the police came into the old man's house because of the neighbors hearing the yelling from the old man. This really makes the reader anxious of knowing what's going to happen and the fear of the murderer getting
