Fear can save you one day.Fear helps you withhold irrational acts,keeps you alert,and may help you survive.Although ,fear can be damaging to you as well ,by causing paranoia and clouding rational thoughts.Edgar Allan Poe uses fear to show the pain it causes people in “The Tell-Tale Heart”, “The Pit and the Pendulum”, and “The Masque of Red Death”. Poe uses symbolism, irony, and imagery to show how fear can twist characters' minds. The narrator in “The Tell-Tale Heart” was fearful of the old man’s judgement,so he killed him .The Narrator believed he could easily get away with this treacherous crime,but once he let the police in it was over for him,for his guilt consumed him which lead to him admitting the crime and being punished.This was probably the worst thing that could happen to the narrator since he tried so hard not to get caught.For example, he stalked the old man for days just to make sure he was not seen when he killed the elderly man .For “The Masque of Red Death” Poe writes “one by one dropped revellers in the blood-bedewed halls...and died each in the despairing posture of his fall”(61).Prince Prospero did all he could to make sure the Red Death did not get into his castle.The prince made sure he was secluded from the outside dangers, what he didn't know that death was coming for him ,and he can’t run away from it .The prince ended up running away from the red death till his death came, although he did try to save his own life by attacking the Red Death,he did not save himself from its clutches.Both character obsessions made his stories ironic ,for they both died from things they were running from, the fear of
