The short story begins with the grandmother meddling in her son’s summer vacation plans. Her son, Bailey, and his wife and kids all are planning a trip to Florida. The grandmother says, “’Here this fellow that calls himself The Misfit is aloose from the Federal Pen and headed toward Florida and you read here what it says he did to these people. Just you read it. I wouldn’t take my children in any direction with a criminal like that aloose in it I couldn’t answer to my conscience if I did”’(O’Connor). The grandmother insists that the family visit somewhere more culturally rich such as Tennessee to teach the kids new things. Everybody argues with her and it becomes decided that they will go to Florida whether she likes it or not. During their trip down to Florida the grandmother meddles more into the trip and insists that the family make a slight detour to visit a house she remembers. This is the start of the ironic situation caused by the grandmother’s actions. While on their way to the detour they run off the road into a ditch. A car approaches with some men that offer to help. These men are later revealed to be The Misfit and his friends. The Misfit then kills the entire family. This situation is ironic because the grandmother’s main concern for the trip was running into The Misfit. She insisted that if the family listened to her they would be safe, but in the end her meddling with the trip ultimately led them into the exact situation that she wanted to
