Good Man Is Hard To Find Irony

Irony is the basically doing the opposite of what one says they will do. Flannery O’Connor was from Savana, Georgia but lived in Milledgeville, Georgia. She attended Georgia State College for Women and the University of Iowa and she was a devout Catholic (O’Donnell). Flannery O’Connor uses irony a lot in her short story “A Good Man Is Hard to Find” (O’Connor) which makes the story come to life.
“A Good Man Is Hard to Find” written by Flannery O’Connor is about a family trip to Florida even though the grandmother argued about how she did not want go to Florida, when the worst possible thing happens. The family fights and argues throughout the story. While traveling, the grandmother, who is a complainer, remembers that there is a house with a secrete panel that she wants to go see. They turn down a dirt road and through a course of events the family eventually
The grandmother does not wish to leave the cat. “She didn’t intend for the cat to be left alone in the house for three days because he would miss her.” (O’Connor). The irony here is that cats are not the type of animals who miss people or even care about their owners. During the whole ordeal of the family the cat is not seen; however, at the closing of the story, the cat is seen cuddling up nest to The Misfit. In fact, the cat actually shows affection to The Misfit as if the cat is grateful that the grandmother has been shot. This is ironic because the grandmother took the cat because she did not want it to be lonely, however; the cat is never portrayed as lonely. He is portrayed as a normal cat loving the new owner. Through these examples, one can see the amount of irony that O’Connor’s “A Good Man Is Hard to Find” has in it. O’Connor uses many types of irony in the story and portrays the characters as a normal southern family on a normal trip. Her education had a good influence on her ability to write.
