A Good Man Is Hard To Find Literary Analysis
The short story “A Good Man is Hard to Find” by Flannery O’Connor mainly focuses on the unfortunate series of events that comes to the family on this road trip. While the grandma is aware of the “misfit” on the trail to Florida, she attempts to convince the family to visit Tennessee. However, no one pays attention to her outlook on the trip and the children give her aristocratic responses. Although the plantation road that the grandma request to take ends up getting them in a situation they can't escape. The purpose of the short story could be the presentation of the divine grace that the horribly imperfect can poses. While the grandmother acts like a saintly lady, she is less than perfect. The short story is not very convincing because
of the irony that is found throughout the story. I think the author may have overlooked the detail that the misfit had a gang with him, however, this adds to the climax of the story and helps to encourage the actions that happen to the family. In the short story, the reactions of the grandma towards the thoughts of hating a home state may have been emphasized, With that being said, the response aided in understanding the outlook that some of the family members truly have on the surroundings. The author is slightly one-sided, in the story the grandmother is presented as the women who claim that good is in everyone, even telling the misfit that they are both equal children of God, although the grandmother always pointed out flaws or comments that can be seen as bad. This short story did hold my interest because from the beginning I had suspicions of the family meeting the misfits, but, I was not prepared for the shocking ending. With that being said, parts of the story annoyed me, such as the attitudes that the children had towards the older run down restaurant or gas station. At the end of this paper I realized that even though someone may seem like the perfect person on the outside, many imperfections and bad qualities can be spotted through self-centered decisions made. Questions that I still have over the short story would be where did this mysterious road lead to and why would the ‘misfit” and his gang be on this road if it was just leading by an old plantation house the grandmother misdirected guided. The piece gives me a similar feeling of the short story “Hills like white elephants.” In both short stories, I feel as if there would be a communication barrier and lack of respect for one's opinion.
