Papa taught me about taking sun sights and navigation, even navigating by the night stars. It is a job I love since I’m not much for sewing and tatting, and other jobs the weaker sex is supposed to enjoy. Also, I love maths, so Papa even turned over most of the navigating to me while offshore once he decided I am capable, and only checks behind me now and again to make sure I am not too sloppy with the chore. When closer to shore, my father always makes a point to check behind me on every watch, explaining it is only necessary and prudent to double-check things when so close to shore. He almost never finds anything to correct though.
And I can splice a line or heave a sounding lead with the best of them. I can 'hand, reef and steer' too if need be, although I seldom go aloft to work with the men. Papa does not think that is proper for one of the female sex, and I must wear men's trousers when I do go aloft.
