A Long Way Gone Chapter 1 Summary
In this chapter, Ishmael and his friends are walking along and start to hear a loud crashing noise. Upon hearing the noise they go to investigate and discover the noise came from the ocean waves crashing against the rocks. The boys continue walking, until they come to a village that looked deserted. when they arrive at the village, the boys are attacked by fishermen holding machetes and fishing nets. They were resettled to the ground, tied up and brought to the village chef. News had spread that a group of young boys was walking to the village and they were RUF. The boys are untied and took their shoes. After being untied, the boys were chased into the desert. Without shoes, the boys feet started to burn in the hot sand. They walked until they …show more content…
Nobody spoke a word. When the boys finally spoke to ask the man's name he says “Its not necessary. This way we will all be safe.” Once the boys could walk again, they realized that they were only a half mile from the village they just ran from. The man told them that the hut was his fishing hut that he used to store fish and equipment. For the next 2 weeks, the boys rested and recovered in the fishermans hut until one morning the mother of the fisherman told them the chef of the village had found out about the boys and they had to leave right away to avoid capture. The mother gave the boys a bag of dried fish and some water to take with them when they left. The boys quickly thanked the mother and ran for a half mile before the village guards caught up with them and they were brought them back the the village to be judged before the chef. The chef told them that he was going to throw them in the ocean to be swept away by the waves and drown. After being labeled “devils” and striped of their close to humiliate them a little more before killing them, the village guards found two rap cassette tapes in Ishmael's

    A group of boys find themselves deserted on an island after their plane crashed. One boy, Ralph, finds a conch shell and blows into it to bring all of the boys together. The boys elect Ralph to be their chief and he creates rules to gain structure for the group. Ralph focuses on important tasks for their long term survival, like building a signal fire. But, his second-in-command, Jack, focuses on hunting instead. The rules Ralph set begin to fade after Jack leads his hunters on a hunt and they allow the fire to die. Ralph blames Jack for letting the fire go out and this creates a rift between Jack and Ralph. The rift is deepened by fear of a beast which a “littlun” claims he saw. Eventually, Jack creates a new tribe of hunters after a falling-out with Ralph and takes most of the older boys with him.
