The main character, later to be known as Horse, moved from Boston to the West in 1845. While he bathed in a creek, he got captured by an Indian warrior, from an Indian tribe called Crows. Horse was forced to be a slave for the warrior’s mother. The mother, later
to be known as Greasy Hand, threw a piece of meat at the ground and he fought the dogs for it. He would fetch and carry the women's things when the tribe would travel. Next, Horse became a horse.
Horse became a horse because he wanted to be docile like the horses. When he figured out Crows language, Horse asked Greasy Hand if Horse had a name and Greasy Hand shrugged to let him know he didn't have one. So Horse told her to call him Horse, and after they, the tribe, called him Horse when they needed him. Last, he became a man.
Horse finally became a man when he married Pretty Calf,Greasy Hand’s daughter. “He was no more a horse but a kind of man, a half-Indian, still poor and unskilled but laden with honors, clinging to the buckskin fringes of Crow society,”(Johnson).
He became more of a man when he found out that Pretty Calf was pregnant with his child. After all, Horse went through a lot of changes.
In conclusion, Horse went through a lot of changes in his life. He developed into a slave, a horse, and a man. Change can be good and can be bad, but Horse wanted change and that’s what he got.
