For many American students, bloody conflicts in Africa seem so far away, so impersonal and contrary to their own experiences that they have trouble connecting to the people whose lives are affected or to the larger issues of the arms trade, blood diamonds, corruption, poverty or refugees. The Bite of the Mango personalizes the horrors of Sierra Leone's experiences with civil conflict through the actual experiences of a 12 year old girl who suffered greatly yet overcame many hardships to make a new life for herself in Canada.…
Werner Doyle performed a brain biopsy on Susannah. The results confirmed the expected inflammation of her brain. They knew that she had an autoimmune disease, but they didn’t know what kind. In the meantime, they could begin treatment with intravenous steroids. A Dr. Dalmau was given her spinal fluid samples to test for Anti-NMDA-receptor autoimmune encephalitis. Dr. Dalmau had discovered this disease by studying four women with similar symptoms, including a high white blood cell count, delusions, memory problems, and teratomas in their ovaries. They also had similar antibodies targeting specific areas of the brain, such as the hippocampus. Susannah’s results came back positive, but thankfully, she did not have any teratomas. Because of the aggressive plan of IVIG treatments, steroids, and plasmapheresis, Susannah was discharged from the hospital after twenty-eight days. The doctors weren’t sure if Susannah would ever be completely herself again, but with checkups, therapy, and the treatments, they were…

A nineteen year old female was admitted into the emergency department she had started to notice experiences of convulsion during her morning jogs. She notes that whenever she experiences flashing light such as that of emanating from leaves in trees or from cars passing by caused her to lose consciousness for a short period of time. As such, she has attempts to avoid running through areas that have this type of lighting during sunny days. Anosognosia is a condition where an individual has a disability and is unaware of it. Such as being unaware of their paralysis or blindness. Anosognosia is rooted in physiology, not just a defense mechanism. Ramachandran and colleagues found a connection between anosognosia and mirror neurons. What the scientists found, was that a man with a phantom hand could feel things being done to another individual hand by simple watching. They suggest this occurs because the mirror neurons are being activated but not the null signal which tells them it’s not really them experiencing the touch. So the mirror neuron activity was being experienced like a full blown conscious event. Awesome!…

The way that an individual is diagnosed with Art syndrome is by the showing of the following symptoms that are going to be and explained throughout my paper. Its by the showing of these symptoms and the trait running in the history of families that one can come to find out that Art Syndrome is what their disorder is. Some symptoms that follow the diagnoses of Art syndrome can start off mild and become more progressive as time surpasses, but the symptoms differ when it comes to sex. The males of the families that carry the trait of Art Syndrome have symptoms like sensorineural hearing lose which stands for complete or almost complete lose of the ability to hear and this is caused by the abnormalities in the inner ear canal. Other symptoms and features include but not limited to weak muscle tone; medically refereed to as hypotonia, impaired muscle coordination; medically refereed to as ataxia, developmental delay can occur and also intellectual disability can happen. In early childhood of young boys they can develop a vision loss which is caused by the degeneration of nerves, these nerves are what carry information from the eyes to the brain; medically refereed to as optic nerve atrophy, and finally they can experience the loss of sensation and the weakness within there limbs. Now when it come the females side of this disorder they don't have it as bad as the males do, the most that females…

; because in 2,500 births one person is affected by this disorder and with 50% affecting both hands (“Syndactyly”). The condition is stated to occur in isolation for no identifiable reason along with its’ inheritance. Some scientists have theories that the condition may be caused by a protein deficiency in the mother during pregnancy. There are some typical diseases that show a pattern of association with this malformation like Downs syndrome, hereditary Syndactyly and Crouzon’s disease (“Syndactyly”). There is a way that Syndactyly can be detected which is by prenatal ultrasound, although the accuracy of this method is not consistent. When a person has this malformation, the patients age and degree of the malformation will determine if the person will have a surgery to treat the abnormaility; all but the mildest cases are treated with surgery (Bae). When it comes to management of the Syndactyly condition is said to be low…
Although many strive to avoid it, people are running into contested space moments after they open their eyes each morning. We form these walls of contested space automatically, sometimes subconsciously which comes into play as we go about life. Contested space is a generally used term; that has a fairly vague definition. However, Mary Louise Pratt In her work: Arts Of The Contact Zone expresses it use well, stating: “ I use this term to refer to social spaces where cultures meet, clash, and grapple with each other, often in context of highly asymmetrical relations of power” I have personally identified contested space to be space where people or ideals collide resulting in place for each player within the situation. By viewing Monticello High School at three levels, landscape, space, and place, you can begin to break it down and see the many forms of contested space. Contested space can vary from a very physical sense, to a completely mental state, affecting how we go about life in very different ways. Monticello High School is the ideal environment for both forms of contested space.…
