Congenital Fusion
A rarely seen birth anomaly congenital fusion of mandible and maxilla causes limited mouth opening, malnutrition and affect facial growth negatively1. Two terms that describe fusion are synechiae2 and syngnathia and may be either unilateral or bilateral. These terms define the type of the tissue involved in the fusion; soft and bony tissues respectively. Synechiae is only the soft tissue union of the jaws, but syngnathia is bony and soft tissue fusion of maxilla and mandible.
In this case report, a newborn with severe syngnathia was presented and treatment modality was discussed with a review of the literature.
