People went about expressing themselves by a much higher standard than what is accepted now. What is interesting the most is that being a politician did not used to be a full time job, that is why to make a logical argument, one needed proof and make a coherent pamphlet (Weeks). But now politicians stay in for so long that slander and libel must be thrown because they forgot who they are, they are members of the general public as well. But swift did a joking piece of political argument first and he did it better than any contemporary political reviewer could today. Maybe if our journalists were as good as Jonathan Swift and his satire, people would actually care about their political world around them. But such brilliant works have been accidentally volunteered to be read almost exclusively in English classes. But like I said, I doubt any writer today could match Swift’s irony, stance or shock value through bait-and-switch methods. Now they just throw words at a wall and see what
