In Ireland, the government does not want to help the poor people of his kingdom. This is a dark topic but he doesn’t really suggest eating baby this article was written to catch the attention of rich people. Maybe with the upper class reading this article they would indeed help the poor families because cannibalism should never be considered it just inhuman. The author is very persuasive with his idea that to get the reader’s attention
Persuading the readers, the author tries to get in touch with their emotions over his reasoning. According to the author, “Another great advantage in my scheme, that it will prevent those voluntary abortions, and that horrid practice of women murdering their bastard children “(Swift). This is a strong point he is trying to get to with this article. How could a mother just kill their own children the feeling they must be have is probably unexplainable? Having a baby is a is a big deal in the world but being part of the lower class of the kingdom it is not right to raise a child. The mothers don’t want their babies to suffer.
The math is done and it turns out that only one hundred and twenty thousand babies are to be born from lower class income families.
These kids are said to become nothing in the kingdom besides becoming thieves or worse. Swift plans out that there will 20 that will be used to breed and the rest will be used for food consumption (Swift). This will allow the poor families to still have children but to a certain extent. After their breeders are born for the future they will continue to have babies but will be able to do as to what swift has proposed eat the babies. According to Swift, “The mother will have eight shillings net profit, and be fit for work till she produces another child” (A Modest Proposal). The poor families will be able to pay for rent have and live a better lifestyle because of the income that will be coming into the household.
The author states, “I think the advantages by the proposal which I have made are obvious and many, as well as of the highest importance (Swift). The reasoning he has stated are facts but is an inhuman solution. The informs the reader that he doesn’t have children and that his wife cannot have any children. Maybe if he had children he would not be informing the audience of this proposal. At the end of the day he would resort to his proposal because the government is not helping the poor people like himself and this would help through the struggle. The argument the author is proposing is not invalid. He states the causes and effects of what is happening in his kingdom. He hits many key things about his proposal so his idea doesn’t hit a bump and it does not end up going
anywhere.
Swift is successful in proposing his idea to eat babies. Using all of the emotional appeal methods the authors really persuades the reader on how it is a great idea. According the author, “I have not the least personal interest in endeavoring to promote this necessary work, having no other motive than the public good of my country, by advancing our trade, providing for infants, relieving the poor, and giving some pleasure to the rich (Swift). The Government is not giving any assistance to Ireland so with satirical article he hopes to get their attention.
