A Narrative Essay About The American Dream
My father had a saying growing up that he would tell me religiously, “un buen gallo en cualquier gallinero canta.” It directly translates to “a good rooster in any henhouse sings.” It was a metaphor meaning that regardless of the place or the obstacles in front of me, I could always succeed. My background and experiences are unique compared to most. I was raised in a Hispanic household, the son of immigrant parents who came to this country both at young age in search of the American dream. I am a first generation Mexican-American and my parents have always reminded me of such. This country has blessed me with many opportunities, some of which I would not be able to fully appreciate were it not for my background. My parents scarified a lot throughout the years so that I could have more …show more content…
They wanted to see their neighbor prosper as much as them and believed that there was enough good in the world for everyone to share. That small town outside of Guadalajara, Mexico taught me valuable lessons that I still hold on to today. It taught me to never forget about family and carry on their legacy and beliefs. I also learned that there is room enough in this world for people of all cultures to come together and prosper. My grandparents are predominately farmers and did not have much, but are loving people and wished the best upon anyone they met. The visits were always humbling and helped me realize that I need to make the most out every opportunity given to me. My diversity is beneficial to the veterinary class because I understand the importance of education and comradery. My background helps to bring a fresh prospective and ideas. I am bilingual, which allows me to communicate with multiple different types of people and gives me the opportunity to get to know their prospective. I have an understanding of a unique Hispanic-American culture and understand those values, as well as the people who share those

I was raised in a Mexican-American home. My parents had my older sister when soon after they graduated high school, so they struggled to provide the economic needs for my older sister’s heart surgeries when she was an adolescent. Because of these conflicts in their life they continued pursuing higher education while allowing my grandmother to look after my sister. They eventually started dedicating their lives to more work than play; therefore, that lead to me and my siblings to raised by my grandmother. Moreover, I grew up living in my grandmother’s house chasing chickens and being forced to eat everything on my plate. My cousins were in the same situation, and we were all around the same age. That lead us to spend everyday together, making…

As far as I am concerned, it is definite that like my parents who transplanted themselves in this country, I too yearn for the American Dream. At home, I am different. I am American. I am a Chicana. I speak English. I dress differently. I may not seem Mexican enough, yet I still share the struggles that are a reality to my parents. I was the little brown girl with an American dream. I never once doubted that dream, so I confidently followed it. My story is not a unique story. This is the story of a person who seeks to be an asset to this country. However, my journey is one that places me in a dissent with those who would rather prefer I do not combat the injustice in my community. For this reason, I am the sole curmudgeon Latine in the perspective of those who are out of reach with my experiences.…

A recent event in my life where I felt proud was getting enough money to help my parents pay for bills and succeed and pursue "the american dream". I started to work for HoneyBaked Ham part time since I was eligible to work. The paychecks felt great and giving them to my parents was felt better. As my sister and I get ready for college, the money got tight and I did gigs on the side. I did everything from landscaping to repairing phone screens. Felt stressful but, mind over matter right? Thats exactly what my parents thought when they moved overseas to the new world. I felt a huge sense of pleasure as I could see stress lift off their shoulders when I gave them the money This would help me in college because I know I can give myself the extra…

Growing up I would have never imagined myself here. Long before I could consider medicine a possibility I had aspired to work alongside my father as a butcher. I was born in Merida, Mexico to a single mother. As the man of the house I began working at the age of seven cleaning windshields at stoplights and polishing shoes for any available change that people could spare. I came to America at age of twelve. My father had been anxiously waiting to meet me the day I arrived in Houston. My first challenge tested my capabilities at adapting to a foreign country without any family members to support me, other than my father who would spend most of the day at work, and learning a new language; however, I was oblivious to the real hardships and obstacles…

My dad was fifteen years when he did something I can never even imagine about doing; he crossed the border. He sacrificed so much in order to live a better life, without him I would not be writing this essay right now. My mother is a first generation Mexican-American, like myself, and also experienced the affects of her parents wanting more for their family. Fortunately for us, our family has strived in today’s society and would not be where we are without hardwork and dedication.…

Growing up in a community that is mostly Hispanic creates a type of shield, not allowing for different cultures or ethnicity to diversify the community. A Hispanic family living in such an isolated community takes a toll on the way we view the world. This environment has indulged my curiosity. Being the second youngest sibling of my family of seven has allowed me to learn from my older brothers, and have the privilege to be a leader to my little brother and serve as a role model to him. Though none of my family members went to college, and my parent’s highest education being a high school diploma, it hasn’t discouraged me to follow their footsteps, but rather give the encouragement to dedicate myself to be the first generation and in my whole…

As a first generation U.S-born Hispanic in my family, I have been able to appreciate the obstacles that many Hispanic families endure. Being Hispanic allowed me to understand and experience the common struggles and differences within my community. Within my own family, I was able to witness difficulties with language barriers and English reading competencies. Regular, simple tasks such as filing applications, writing and understanding college admissions seemed complex and time-consuming for my parents. It was through observing their struggle which formulated my sentiment that education is the key to succeeding and overcoming disparities, such as low socio-economic status. In addition, this further allowed me to have a greater appreciation for educational attainment and advancement. Being Hispanic enabled me to relate to many other Hispanic individuals and their families.…

In 2006 I moved to California with my parents, to pursue the American Dream that was dreamed by every foreigner It was seen as a great way to escape the danger and poverty we faced everyday in Peru. When we finally got here, the american dream was a myth, and working hard barely got you anywhere. Since day 1 both my parents have worked more than 40 hours a week to get food on the table, and the table back in Peru. They both support their parents and siblings financially, meaning there is no aid for me here. I wake up to do everything by myself, cook, clean, go to school, and especially homework. The workload from school kept getting harder each year, and it got worse during the start of high school. When I first arrived back from my first day of 9th grade I had to annotate a poem written by Shakespeare. As I sat down to do the homework I realized I didn't know what annotating meant. I asked my parents for help and they didn’t even knew who Shakespeare was. The same routine happened everyday, it's even happening now as I ask for advice on how to apply for college. No answer.…
