1. I choose to use Posner and the article written by Boyd. Both of these readings posed excellent thoughts on how our curricula is affected by our culture. In the article, five Ways Teachers are Fighting Fake News, Boyed states (2017), “while students absorb media constantly, they often lack the critical thinking skills needed to tell fake news from the real stuff.” In this article Boyd tells of how different teachers are working media into their curricula by teaching students what is real news and what is fake news. This is a current popular topic in teaching. In the text book, Posner analyzes the work of “A Nation at Risk.” This report tells of how a curriculum is developed around economy, society, and our values in education. Posner (2003) states, “Americans were engaged in a bitter economic competition with foreign countries, and education was the key to success in that competition” (p.37).

I choose the Boyd piece for this discussion board because I felt it was easily relatable to our society today. It focused on one-problem students have in our classrooms today, that is they easily believe fake news in the media and online. This is an issue many students today face. Students us online resources in the classroom to complete assignments. Students need to have the skills to recognize what is real and what is not real in order to make wise decisions when trusting a source. I found this to be most relevant in our educational world today.
B. The problem being address by a certain curriculum decision was that students rely heavily on media to find their answers to questions. This then shows us that they are unsure of what is real information and what is not. This lead to the teachings of researching what makes information true or not true. In the article, Boyd tells of how different teachers at different grade levels teach students how to find reliable resources online. They are incorporating this into their classrooms to help their students become better

    The United States has an extensive educational system that has been charged with accommodating the needs of an extensively diverse student population. U.S. educational institutions exist at all learning levels, from preschools for early childhood education to secondary education for youths, and post secondary education for both young and older adults. Education in the United States can be commended for the many goals it aspires to accomplish—promoting democracy, assimilation, nationalism, equality of opportunity, and personal development.
