Manny tries to achieve his goals through hard work, as Martinez states in the book ‘’Without work I was empty as a coke bottle.’’ By that quote, the author tries to show us, that when Manny is not working, he feels motionless and not satisfied. In One flew over the cuckoo’s nest, Ken Kesey uses first person narration by a secondary character using a subjective tone. By using an unstable perspective of a schizophrenic Indian, Bromden, results in ambiguity leading the readers to make decisions on which parts of the plot are real and which are hallucinated. Sentence structure and machine imagery help emphasise the ambiguity of the novel by placing the reader through the mind of Bromden. Through using these techniques Kesey mystifies the plot which makes the reader to ponder over whether the plot is real or hallucinated.…

“I just really don’t like being the center of attention that much. It’s kind of ironic.” Whether it means giving a speech in front of an audience or dancing on a stage, no one likes it. However, in the novel, The Flamingo Rising, Larry Baker introduces Louise, a different type of person that will do anything to be the center of attention. I believe in judging someone by their actions and character rather than by the color of their skin and sexuality. This I believe because there is good and bad in all of us. The color of our skin does not depict the flaws we have. In the second amendment it states that all men are created equal, but we still do not treat each other equally. Defending Tom Robinson was not easy because I knew that from the minute Mayella opened her mouth Tom was a dead man. But everyone including a black man deserves a second chance. How could I ever tell my own children “You never really understand a person until you consider things from their point of view - until you climb into his skin and walk around in it” if I didn’t pick up Tom’s case because I was afraid of what people would think of me. When people say things about me like “Atticus Finch is the same in his house as he is on the public streets” why would I prove them wrong? You are only as good as you portray yourself to be. But when you are a black man in the town of Maycomb, Alabama you were never dealt the good hand to begin with. Sadly Tom never got a second chance. Tom was a good man but because of the color of his skin he was not treated as fairly as the rest of us.…

Jodi Picoult said, “Kids think with their brains cracked wide open; becoming an adult, I've decided, is only a slow sewing shut.” In the town of Maycomb, Alabama, in the middle of the Great Depression, six-year-old Scout Finch lives with her older brother Jem, and her father Atticus who is a lawyer. One year a boy named Dill spends the summer with his aunt. The three children become friends and soon become obsessed with a nearby house. The next year, Atticus is appointed by the court to defend a black man, Tom Robinson, who is accused of raping Mayella Ewell, the daughter of a poor, notoriously vicious white man named Bob Ewell. Atticus presents a powerful defense of Tom and makes it clear that Ewell is lying. Jem is convinced Atticus will win the case, but the all-white jury still convicts Tom. Jem…

Martinez uses interior monologue to characterize his protagonist Manny. As Manny observes the Mexican field workers he says “for some reason I thought he was the best man on the field” (17). This suggests that Manny also admires other people with good work ethic, and sympathetic to the Mexican immigrants. While talking to Mr. Hart Manny says to himself “Too embarrassed to tell him that attending another school was just a dream of my mom’s... another one that probably wasn’t going to hatch…” (43). This shows Manny doesn’t share personal thoughts with his teacher. After the boxing match Manny has an epiphany “the whole fight shouldn’t have been given so much meaning…” (138). This shows Manny feels apart of his Razo, but not ashamed because he sees the situation more deeply. After being called out at the party “… I saw the reflection of a ridiculous boy. It was me looking at myself…” (181). This reveals Manny just realizes who he was at the time. When sitting in his living room Manny realizes how “wondrous” his family and home are (216). This shows the point where Manny finally accepts his own life for what it is.…
