“A Peaceful Woman Explains Why She Carries a Gun” is an excerpt from Linda M. Hasselstrom’s essay Land Circle that details why and for what purpose she purchases a handgun and concealed carry permit. In the essay, Mrs. Hasselstrom recounts several instances where men disrespected and purposefully intimidated her in violent ways that truly scared her. Originally, Mrs. Hasselstrom took Kung Fu, but soon realized that if she was attacked by an average male, he could easily over power her just due to his superior size. Now armed with a gun at all times, Mrs. Hasselstrom’s interaction with belligerent man changed drastically. Men still acted disorderly and disregarded her polite requests to cease, but when she displayed her gun the whole overtone…

The elements Dayna Lorentz, used in her book, No Safety In Numbers, were point of view, setting, and dramatic irony. The first, point of view, is told from the 3rd person multiple. This is odd, and not commonly used, however in this story it makes since to tell the story of multiple teens viewpoint, as each finds out more and more and adapts to this changing environment. As shown in this quote from page 149, “The girl was white as death. All Lexi had wanted was to get out of the store. She owed ginger something.” However Lexi was just one of the characters Lorentz chose to go deeper into. This achieved a suspenseful mood and made you feel like you were inside with each of them. Lorentz was smart to do this, it was one of the best ways to achieve emotional attachment. Overall this lead the reader to be engaged, like it was actually happening. It was a refreshing change of pace from books that do not let you fully engage, but force you to look in through a peephole.…

Patria notices how “on that very rocker where [she] had nursed [her] babies that [she] saw [her] sister Minerva looking through the viewfinder of an M-1 carbine—a month ago [Patria] would not have known it from a shotgun” and how “in the pretty script [she and Mate were] taught by the nuns to writing out Bible passages” they recorded their assortment of guns (Alvarez 167-168). Alvarez combines very feminine activities with what society would define as “manly” and too violent for women to be a part of—being knowledgeable in munitions and possessing them—to illustrate the influence of courage, especially being a woman who is expected to be passive and weak and is pregnant. Alvarez also expresses the irony of women themselves hindering their own success apart from men, such as through submissive sister Dede Mirabal who “considered...politics...something for men” and followed her non-revolutionary husband (Alvarez 70, 172). Alvarez suggests through Dede that women who stick to their social role as the passive and subservient…

In order to survive her new surroundings, Lola must abandon childhood naïveté for subsistence. The loss of structure within society in turn leads to the loss of purity and adolescence, replaced by adrenaline and fear.…
