The standard is for a 5th grade Social Studies class according to the Georgia Performance Standards.
SS5H6: The student will explain the reasons for America’s involvement in WW II.
a. Describe Germany’s aggression in Europe and Japan’s aggression in Asia.
b. Describe major events in the war in both Europe and the Pacific; include Pearl Harbor, Iwo Jima, D-Day, VE and VJ Days, and the Holocaust.
c. Discuss President Truman’s decision to drop the atomic bombs on Hiroshima and Nagasaki.
d. Identify Roosevelt, Stalin, Churchill, Hirohito, Truman, Mussolini, and Hitler.
e. Describe the effects of rationing and the changing role of women and African-Americans; include “Rosie the Riveter” and the Tuskegee Airmen. …show more content…
It is about Japanese Americans being placed in internment camps during World War II. A Place Where Sunflowers Grow has an excellent multicultural appeal because it is written from the viewpoint of a child that is ethnically Japanese so it could allow students to view this event from a different perspective. It contains a lot of really attractive illustrations which could appeal to students and help them visualize the story. This book also would double as an effective tool to help a student who is an English Language Learner because it has the story in both English and Japanese. Since this books Lexile level is 790, which is a little under the level of 5th grade, it could be used as a supplement for struggling readers when talking about Japanese Americans’ situation in World War …show more content…
It has various sections with different aspects of the war to who the Allied Powers and their leaders to the US Home Front during the war. These sections make the website easy to navigate and make for a complete overview of World War II. The website also contains interactive word searches and crossword puzzles students can complete to learn the content and test their knowledge.

This site is very interactive and has excellent content on the Tuskegee Airmen. The website has a timeline feature that highlights the major events of World War II and the development of the Tuskegee Airmen. This website would be a great source for teachers to use for reluctant readers because, as stated before, it is very interactive and puts the information into short passages. Overall, this is a great source for teaching 5th grade students on the Tuskegee Airmen.
