For my sixteenth birthday all I ever wanted was my very own car. A car I could take to school, Pick my friends up in, and have the freedom that I have always wanted. For me to do this would mean I have to convince my parents to purchase one for me. Convincing my parents, means I would have to clean, get good grades, and give them plenty of reasons of why I deserved my own vehicle. I knew it was going to be difficult.…
Cell phones have become the leading source of communication in the world. However, it is not just phone calls or e-mails anymore, someone might take down time to play angry birds or candy crush saga. If your cell phone is left on and completely unattended someone, knows your location. Over 200 million Americans who own a cell phone have been watched on a data base created by the cell phone company, keeping track of tower signals, recording conversations, and making copies of text messages and emails. Even the United States government has gone to the extent to using cell phone information when coming to court evidence and alibies. Parents are becoming technologically aware and are using tracking abilities to keep an eye on their children and their whereabouts. The question remains, where can you draw the line between…
In recent years, researchers have searched for ways to improve on dietary assessment methods. One tool that is widely available for use is smartphone applications. My meal mate is a smartphone application designed to monitor dietary intake. It was developed as a weight loss guide. However, the capacity for My Meal Mate a potential dietary assessment tool was not yet established. The paper by Carter et al. examines My Meal Mate in this capacity, and attempts to validate the tools use as a means for dietary assessment. Fifty volunteers were invited to record seven days worth of intake on My Meal Mate. During the seven day period, volunteers were randomly telephoned and asked to complete a 24 hour recall. Total energy and macronutrient intake…
To me, a privilege is a gift given to someone. It comes at a the price like the full-time job my family works, the time I give to my education, or the flowering Buddy-Poppie reminding me of the cost soldiers pay for my privilege of freedom. Privileges…
I am privileged in many ways, but the one privilege I appreciate the most is my health and my ability to physically and mentally do anything I want. I choose to encounter and explore ableism in the form of healthy privilege and how I and social institutions oppress those that are chronically ill, severely obese, or otherwise limited by ill health with a restricted ability to function physically and/or mentally both as individuals and in society. The following will include how I encounter my own privilege of ableism and healthy privilege, a history of laws and movements in place to help those with special needs, encounters with the disabled, and what more we can do to change the lives of the disabled for the better.…
Another privilege I am proposing is a senior study hall. If there are any seniors that have an open period in their schedule they will be able to choose to take that study hall in place of that free period to work on College applications, scholarships and/or college essays. They must be a senior in good standing and must be requesting 5 academic classes at either an honors or AP level. The school is challenging students to take a more rigorous schedule to get ready for college and so this opportunity will give students an opportunity to get help from students, teachers and…
As I read the article, I didn’t feel myself getting extremely defensive at a majority of the parts as I hoped to read the article with an open mind and accept the constructive criticism. However, there was one part of the article where I didn’t grasp initially, it was when Hall and Fields mentioned, “Black persons feel pressure to explain racism, or to teach white persons about it; but that is not their responsibility” (2012, p. 165). I thought initially, shouldn’t the people who are experiencing racism be the ones to explain it? But I realized after that it’s the responsibility of those in power to seek out the knowledge of those who are willing to provide it and educate themselves. By realizing this and examining my privilege throughout this…
In the article, “You Love Your iPhone. Literally.”, author Martin Lindstorm, suggests that people have the same love for their iPhones as they do for a significant other. In Lindstorm’s experiment, he exposed 16 participants between the ages of 18 and 25 to separately watch and listen to a ringing and vibrating phone. He would then watch to see what parts of their brains would activate. Lindstorm found that if a person saw a visual of an iPhone vibrating, not only would that person’s visual cortex activate, but their audio cortex would activate too. Then on the other hand if a person heard the audio of an iPhone ringing their audio cortex, along with their visual cortex, would activate. The last piece of data that Lindstorm collected was that…
A cell phone would be nothing with out a cellular service provider. In order for you and I to have teleconferences, talk with family and friends, or hold any type of conversation while on the go without being tied down by wires cellular service providers offer transmission services to us through radio frequency signals rather than through end-to-end wire communication like land lines. These services can sometimes be complemented with data, messaging, and GPS packages and even more. Due to our constant need to be connected with each other cellular service providers are continuing to grow in the domestic market.…
Roughly 15 years ago a new product emerged onto the market. American consumers could now purchase and use telephones that would travel with them in their automobiles. However, these inventions were large, bulky, the size of a briefcase, and weighed roughly 10 pounds. Modern day Americans have found a place in their everyday lives for this once jaw-dropping invention. Americans have also demanded, and received, adjustments to these mobile telephones. Today it is possible to purchase mobile phones that are hardly the size of one’s palm for an extremely low cost to the consumer. The recent surge in use of cellular phones has changed the way most Americans communicate. Conversely the internet has done the same. However, cell phones have grown at a much more exponential rate and have become the absolute necessity for many people. Cell phones have had a sociological impact unparalleled by any technological innovation before them. Cell phones have been at the center of controversy and skepticism, but they have also been praised for usefulness and their inevitability. This technology has been focused upon as being the source of brain cancer, car accident, attention deficit disorder, and migraines. However it has also proven to be the tool of the most successful people in the business world. The thesis this paper proposes is that cell phones have had a negative social impact but are still quite inevitable.…
How cell phones help solve crimes? This is the subject that I have picked for my research paper. The reason that I picked this subject is because I am fascinated with CSI stuff. I got interested in being a CSI person when I started to watch Dexter. The show was about a person who was a blood splatter analysts for the police department. I was hooked not only on the show but also the job. So when I went back to school I switched my major from business to criminology. I have taken one class on criminology already and loved it.…
The morals and values combine to form ethics, technology and the changes it brings in today’s society, the effect of cell phones, the different use of the cell phone, and who can use their cell phones in the nursing homes.…
For me I believe that I have had a financial privilege because my family helped me financially during my undergraduate degree. They were the reason I was able to get my bachelors without working very much or taking loans out. This does not mean that I lived an extravagant life, but that I was able to make it through college living on a very strict budget. I like to look at it as my basic needs were being met. The privilege of health ties into this idea as well because I always have had health insurance incase I needed it. Although I do not readily go to the doctor only for extreme cases. It is nice to have it when you need it and I feel very fortunate that I can afford my own insurance now. Finally, the privilege of education also was something that I was fortune to have. My family was happy that I got my undergraduate degree, but at the same time they were not supportive of my graduate level degree. They wanted me to get working and help them out. So, I had to make a choice to take off a year and work to save money for graduate school and to help them. I also had to make the choice to work two jobs and go to school part time to survive. I had to learn how to use the privileges I already received to continue to make way for my own financial, health, and education goals to continue on the path that I wanted to…
