A Raisin In The Sun Gender Analysis

In this play A Raisin in the Sun, shows a lot of gender difference and by being a female or a male they are to act and do things a certain way. Walter is the only male adult in the house. He is a strong hearted man who believes that everything he wants to do should be supported by his wife, sister and mother, but the way he acts just makes them not want to support him. For example, Walter has this idea of going into business to build up his own liquor store with the money his mother is getting from the insurance company. His wife think it is not a good idea and so does his mother. Walter feels “A man needs for a woman to back him up…” He also shows that he should be supported no matter what by saying “That is what is wrong with the colored
woman in this world… Don’t understand about building their men up and making ‘em feel like they somebody. Like they can do something.”
As women in the family, they feel that family should be one of the first to get taken care of, even if you have to go out of your way. As the mother, Lena Younger, she shows strength and wisdom for her family. No matter what she will do her best to try to support her family. She worked day in night to still earn money to take care of them, and so did Ruth. Lena, with her insurance money, went and put a down payment on a house in a white community. She put money aside to out her daughter Beneatha through doctor school. And eventually gave Walter money to put down for a liquor store. To me I feel the author was trying to show women as supportive and hardworking also for the mean strong well and wanting to do everything for the family.
