Lorraine Hansberry’s play A Raisin in the Sun (1959) asserts that in life, those with less, don’t go there in one day but through a prolonged time of struggle and strife . The first scene of the novel describes that a family that once was united and loving evolved into one that continues to survive in the conflict of society. Furthermore, in order to show this the author describes the once beautiful furniture of the house, seemed to get worn and torn out with time. This section gives the audience the sense that the moments you once had can be replaced by ones you don’t wish for in your lifetime.

The story is set during a time of racial segregation in the south and because they live in the north doesn’t mean they don’t feel the affects. Racial tensions brought in by society could affect countless of problems to the Younger’s including many hate comments by others, making the family have low self esteem. The Southside of Chicago could also be a dangerous place with burglars and dealers that could hurt the Younger’s at any time. Similarly, corrupt officials could also scam the family by taking more of their money under their noses.
Moreover the fact that the Younger’s have been living in a small house for years, you can tell they are financially unstable. The way it says on page 23 that the tables and couches had to be moved to cover up the stains that were made on the carpet over the years. Likewise, on page 24 Ruth’s description of a disappointed face could mean the family is in a financial deficit. In the same event, the family could have someone who lost their job and that person could be Ruth.
To wrap it up, the first scene of Lorraine Hansberry’s play A Raisin in the Sun (1959) tells a story of a family that have go through tough times and need some sort of relief in order to stay on track.
